Chapter 9 - Retribution

The aftermath was a hurricane.
Within seventy-two hours, Vale Global’s stock plummeted, then rebounded fiercely as the federal government released the full details of Harold Vance's criminal conspiracy, clearing Adrian of any complicity in the historic crash. Harold Vance was remanded without bail; Serena Keller was held on a five-million-dollar bond.
I sat in the quiet library of Marcus Sterling’s law firm on Friday afternoon. The sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, warming my tea.
The door opened.
Adrian stood in the threshold. He had lost ten pounds in four days. His eyes were sunken, hollowed out by the agonizing realization of what his blind loyalty had cost him. He held a leather binder under his arm.
"Elena," he said, hesitating at the doorway as if he were trespassing on sacred ground. "Marcus said I could have ten minutes."
"Sit down, Adrian," I said quietly.
He walked over and sat in the chair across from me, placing the binder on the polished wood table.
"I signed everything," he said, his voice raw. "Sole legal and physical custody. The child support agreement. The deed to the Hamptons estate, and fifty percent of my personal shares in Vale Global placed into an irrevocable blind trust for the baby."
I looked down at the documents. Every single signature was in place, without a single amendment or objection.
"Why didn't you fight it?" I asked.
"Because you were right," he whispered, a tear finally escaping his eye and tracing a path down his cheek. "You sat across from me with our baby's ultrasound, and I walked out. I traded six years of your love, your loyalty, your patience... for a lie. I don't deserve to be a father to that child, Elena. But I will spend the rest of my life making sure neither of you ever wants for anything."
I looked at the man I had loved for six years. The rage that had carried me through the last four days had burned down into a cool, quiet ache.
"I loved you, Adrian," I told him, looking directly into his shattered eyes. "I would have stood by you through bankruptcy, scandal, and illness. But you made me compete with a ghost. And you let the ghost win every time."
"Can you ever forgive me?" he choked out.
May you like
"Maybe one day," I said. "For our child's sake. But I will never come back to you."
Adrian bowed his head, his shoulders shaking as the reality of his total, self-inflicted destruction closed over him. He stood up, slowly walked to the door, paused for a moment with his hand on the frame, and then walked out of my life.
