Chapter 6 - The Architect of Betrayal

Adrian stumbled out of the high-rise office building into the midday sun, the noise of the city washing over him like white noise. The paper Elena had thrust into his hands felt like lead.

He didn't call his driver. He got into his car, gripped the steering wheel, and dialed Harold Vance’s private line.

"Adrian, my boy," Harold’s jovial, cultured voice boomed through the speakers. "I was just reviewing the quarterly reports for the board meeting tomorrow night. You look exhausted on the news feeds—everything all right at home?"

"Did Marcus Keller work for you, Harold?" Adrian asked, his voice dead and hollow.

A micro-pause on the other end. So brief that under normal circumstances, Adrian would have missed it.

"What on earth are you talking about? Marcus was our chief logistics mechanic years ago. A brave man who sacrificed himself for you. Why are you bringing this up now?"

"Elena found the offshore accounts," Adrian said. "Hydra Logistics."

Silence stretched over the line. When Harold spoke again, the warm, grandfatherly cadence was entirely gone. His voice was flat, dry, and terrifyingly cold.

"Where is she, Adrian?"

"What did you do, Harold?" Adrian’s voice rose to a roar. "Did you set me up on Blackwood Pass?"

"I made you the CEO of this company, Adrian!" Harold hissed. "Your father was weak. He was going to sell Vale Global to foreign investors and dilute our legacy into nothing. I kept this company in your hands. And Serena has kept you compliant, humble, and obedient for six years. You should be thanking us."

"You son of a bitch—"

"Listen to me carefully, boy," Harold warned. "Tomorrow night is the annual Founders' Gala. You will arrive on time. You will announce the merger between Vale Global and Hydra Logistics. If you fail to do so, or if your little runaway wife takes those fabricated documents to the district attorney, Serena will hold a press conference detailing how you drove her father to suicide to cover up your own vehicular manslaughter."

"No one would believe that!"

"They will believe whatever the evidence says," Harold said smoothly. "And since I control the police precinct that took the original report, the evidence says whatever I need it to say. Be at the gala, Adrian. With a smile on your face."

The call clicked off.

Adrian slammed his fists against the steering wheel until the horn wailed into the empty parking garage.

Across town, in a secure conference suite on the forty-second floor of the Sterling building, I sat surrounded by three forensic accountants and two federal investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

"The paper trail is airtight, Mrs. Vale," Agent Miller said, adjusting his glasses as he analyzed the spreadsheets. "Harold Vance has systematically siphoned over thirty million dollars from Vale Global through the Hydra shell corporation. But we have a jurisdictional hurdle. The offshore banks require forty-eight hours to unfreeze the encrypted authorization keys. Vance knows we're circling. If he liquidates the accounts at tomorrow night's board vote, the money will vanish into untraceable crypto wallets."

"He won't liquidate tomorrow," I said, leaning back in my chair.

Marcus Sterling looked at me curiously. "How can you be sure?"

"Because Harold Vance is a narcissist," I said, a cold smile touching my lips. "He wants to humiliate Adrian in public before he strips him of his company. He’s going to force Adrian to sign the merger at the Founders' Gala in front of every shareholder, every journalist, and the entire city elite."

"Then what's our move?" Miller asked.

I touched the subtle swelling of my abdomen beneath my jacket.

"We don't wait for the court order," I said. "We give Vance the audience he wants. And then we execute him in public."
