Chapter 10 - New Horizons

Three weeks later.

The ocean breeze rolled in off the coast of Maine, rustling the linen curtains of the small, cedar-shingled cottage I had bought overlooking the Atlantic.

The salt air tasted clean. The morning sun bathed the wooden deck in pale gold.

I stood by the railing, wearing a thick wool sweater, cradling a mug of warm mint tea with one hand while the other rested gently against my stomach. At fourteen weeks, the slight curve of my belly was undeniable. A new life, safe, protected, and free from the toxic shadow of the Vale legacy.

My laptop sat on the outdoor table behind me, open to the morning financial news:

Vale Global Reorganizes Board Under New Independent Oversight.Serena Keller Pleads Guilty to Federal Fraud Charges; Agrees to 15-Year Plea Deal.Harold Vance Sentenced to 30 Years for Attempted Murder and Wire Fraud.

Justice had been served. The empire had been cleansed. I had walked away with my dignity, my fortune, and my child.

The mail carrier’s truck rattled down the long dirt driveway, stopping by the mailbox at the foot of the hill. A minute later, my personal assistant, Clara, walked up the porch steps carrying a small stack of letters.

"Morning, Elena," she smiled, handing me the bundle. "Mostly congratulations from the old firm, and the finalized deed for the property."

"Thank you, Clara."

I flipped through the envelopes as Clara headed inside to prepare breakfast.

At the bottom of the stack was a thick, cream-colored envelope with no return address, postmarked from Zurich, Switzerland.

My brow furrowed. I turned the envelope over. Written across the back in elegant, precise calligraphy was my name: Elena Hart. Not Elena Vale.

I used my thumb to break the wax seal and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment and a keycard stamped with the insignia of a private Swiss vault.

The letter read:

My dear Elena,

You dismantled Harold Vance with an elegance your father-in-law never possessed. Marcus Keller played his part, Harold played his, and poor, stupid Adrian played his until the very end.

You think you uncovered the secret of Blackwood Pass. But you only found the men who were paid to execute it.

Did you ever ask yourself why Adrian’s father really rejected Hydra Logistics' bid six years ago? Did you ever check the bloodline of the woman who really funded the trust?

Serena was a pawn. Harold was an amateur.

If you want to know who really wanted Adrian dead that night—and why your unborn child carries the only bloodline that can unlock the Vale family’s true fortune—bring the key to Vault 814 in Zurich.

We will be waiting.

A sudden, sharp gust of ocean wind whipped across the deck, fluttering the parchment in my grip.

May you like

I looked down at the Swiss keycard, then out at the endless gray horizon of the sea.

The war wasn't over. It had only just begun.
