Chapter 1

My name is Elena Hart Vale, and the day Adrian underestimated me was the day he destroyed himself.

His phone lit up again.

SERENA KELLER.

Adrian looked at the screen, then slowly pushed back his chair.

"Elena, give me twenty minutes."

I stared at him.

"You're leaving?"

"She might be in trouble."

"I'm pregnant, Adrian."

"I heard you."

Eleven weeks.

I'd carried our baby's first photograph in my purse, waiting for the perfect moment to tell him.

Tonight, I had cooked his favorite dinner.

Lit candles.

Worn the blue dress he'd given me for our anniversary.

I'd asked him to turn off his phone for one evening.

He'd promised.

For twenty minutes, he had laughed with me, asked about my day, and held my hand across the table.

For four seconds after I said, "We're having a baby," I thought I finally mattered most.

Then Serena called.

"Please sit down," I whispered.

Adrian rubbed his forehead.

"Her father saved my life. You know I can't ignore her."

That was always his answer.

When she interrupted our anniversary dinner.

When she called while I was sick with a fever.

I had never asked him to forget the man who saved his life.

I had only asked him to remember his wife.

I pulled the ultrasound photograph from my purse and placed it in front of him.

"This is your child, Adrian."

His expression softened.

Then his phone rang again.

I watched his hand move toward it.

"Don't."

He stopped.

"Please. Just tonight."

"I'll explain when I get back."

"You always explain when you get back."

He stood.

I felt something inside me go terribly quiet.

"Go," I said.

"Don't say it like that."

"How should I say it?"

He had no answer.

"Go choose her."

"That's not what I'm doing."

"Then stay."

Silence.

Adrian picked up his coat.

And walked out.

I sat alone while the candles burned and his dinner went cold.

The ultrasound photograph lay between two untouched wineglasses.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart," I whispered to the tiny life inside me. "I thought your daddy would be happy."

An hour later, I went upstairs.

I packed my clothes, passport, medical records, and the ultrasound photograph.

I left the jewelry, handbags, expensive dresses, and black credit card.

He could keep every apology he'd ever bought me.

I placed my wedding ring beside the tiny white baby socks on our dresser.

Then I wrote one note.

"You don't have to choose between Serena and me anymore. I've made the decision for you. Our child deserves to grow up knowing they were someone's first choice."

I took my suitcase downstairs.

My hand was almost on the front door when my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

"Mrs. Vale, my name is Dr. Rebecca Collins. I work at the private clinic where Serena Keller has been receiving treatment."

I froze.

A second message arrived.

"Your husband has been told there's an emergency tonight. But there's something you deserve to know about why Serena keeps calling him."

Then a third message appeared.

"Please don't tell Adrian I've contacted you. Serena isn't the only person who's been keeping a secret from him."

I looked back at the empty dining room.

For six years, I thought I knew why Adrian kept choosing Serena.

Now I wondered how much of that story had been a lie.
