Chapter 9

The sound was deafening in the enclosed marble foyer.

I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the burning agony of a bullet tearing through my back. Nora whined in my arms, clutching my collar.

One second passed. Two seconds.

There was no pain.

I opened my eyes and turned around.

Julian Kane was still standing behind the podium, but his ceramic gun was lying on the marble floor. He looked down at his own chest, where a dark crimson blossom was rapidly spreading across his pristine white tuxedo shirt.

Julian looked up, his eyes wide with disbelief, coughing up a mouthful of dark blood.

He collapsed forward over the podium, knocking it to the ground, before slumping motionless onto the cold marble flagstones.

Standing at the base of the staircase, his service weapon still smoking, was Captain Vance.

Vance lowered his gun, his face grim and pale. He turned to face Adrian, immediately holstering his weapon and standing at full attention.

"Order restored, Mr. Kane," Vance said, his voice rough. "I take orders from the head of this family. Not a murderer."

The four other guards immediately lowered their weapons, stepping back in submission.

The ballroom was dead silent save for the ragged breathing of the remaining staff and guests.

Adrian stood at the bottom of the stairs. He slowly turned his head to look at me and Nora. He tucked his gun into his waistband, walked up to us, and wrapped both of his massive arms around us, pulling us against his chest.

For the first time in three years, the tension left his body. He buried his face into Nora’s hair, his broad shoulders shaking silently.

"You're safe," Adrian whispered, his voice broken and thick with tears. "You're both safe. Nobody will ever touch you again."

I leaned against him, the adrenaline finally leaving my system, my legs trembling so violently I could barely stand. Nora reached out with both hands and patted Adrian's cheek.

"All done?" she asked, her sweet, tiny voice cutting through the smell of gunpowder and blood.

Adrian pulled back, looking at her with an expression of pure, unconditional love.

"Yes, baby," Adrian said, smiling through the tears streaming down his face. "All done."

Within twenty minutes, the estate was flooded with state troopers, federal agents, and emergency medical personnel. Julian Kane was declared dead at the scene. The corrupt administrators at St. Jude's Memorial were arrested within the hour following Adrian's direct call to the state attorney general.

The nightmare was finally over.

Or so we thought.
