Chapter 8

Julian’s face went entirely white, but his survival instinct was instantaneous.

"Security!" Julian roared into the microphone. "Security, disarm him! He’s having a violent psychotic episode! He’s armed and endangering a hostage!"

Captain Vance and four armed security guards immediately drew their weapons, moving to block the base of the staircase, their guns aimed upward at Adrian.

The guests panicked. Screams tore through the ballroom as billionaires and diplomats trampled over each other toward the heavy oak exit doors, desperate to escape the line of fire.

"Don't move, Mr. Kane!" Captain Vance barked, his laser sight dancing across Adrian’s chest. "Drop the weapon and step away from the woman and child!"

Adrian didn't flinch. Instead of dropping his gun, he took three slow, deliberate steps down the marble stairs. I followed closely behind him, clutching Nora against my chest. Nora wrapped her arms around my neck, hiding her face, but she wasn't crying anymore. She felt the absolute, unyielding protection radiating from the man in front of us.

"Vance," Adrian said, his voice cold as a winter grave. "You've worked for this family for twelve years. My father paid for your daughter's leukemia treatments. You know who signs your paychecks. And you know what happens to men who point a gun at a Kane."

Captain Vance hesitated, his finger trembling on the trigger.

"Shoot him, you idiot!" Julian screamed from behind the podium, completely losing his composure. "I hired you! I run this company! Kill him and kill the girl!"

The words *'kill the girl'* echoed off the marble walls like a death sentence.

Several board members who hadn't made it out the door stopped dead, turning to look at Julian in absolute horror.

"Kill a three-year-old child, Julian?" Adrian said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper as he descended another step. "Just like you tried to kill her mother on Route 9?"

"She wasn't supposed to be pregnant!" Julian shrieked, the pressure finally snapping his sanity. "Evelyn was supposed to die alone! She found the offshore accounts! She found the shell companies I used to bleed Kane Global dry! If she told you, you would have cast me out with nothing! I built this company while you were off playing soldier!"

The confession hung in the air, heavy and undeniable.

Henri Laurent, standing near the doorway surrounded by his personal bodyguards, looked at Julian with cold disgust. "Mon Dieu, Julian... you monster."

Julian realized what he had just admitted. He looked around the room, seeing the looks of pure horror from the very men whose money he needed to survive. He was finished. His life, his freedom, his empire—gone in ten seconds.

A desperate, feral madness overtook him.

Julian didn't look at Adrian. He looked straight at Nora.

With blinding speed, Julian snatched a small ceramic pistol from inside his cummerbund—an undetectable weapon meant to bypass metal detectors—and leveled it directly at my chest.

"If I'm going to hell," Julian screamed, "I'm taking your bloodline with me!"

"NO!" I screamed, turning my back to shield Nora.
