Chapter 6

"Don't move! Hands where I can see them!" the lead guard barked, his rifle aimed directly at Adrian’s chest.
Nora screamed, burying her face into my collarbone. Instinct took over; I twisted my body around her, shielding her with my back, preparing for the impact of a bullet.
"Julian, you coward," Adrian whispered. He didn't raise his hands. He didn't back down an inch.
"I told you, Adrian," Julian said, his voice no longer suave, but drenched in desperate venom. "You should have stayed in the dark. You should have signed the papers and let me run Kane Global. You were dead to the world anyway. Why couldn't you just stay dead?"
"Because my daughter is alive," Adrian roared.
In a fraction of a second, Adrian moved with terrifying speed.
He didn't dodge; he lunged straight into the lead guard, grabbing the barrel of the rifle, forcing it toward the ceiling just as a deafening gunshot erupted, tearing a chunk out of the plaster cornice above us. Adrian smashed his forehead into the guard's nose with a sickening crunch, wrenched the weapon from the man's grip, and drove the heavy butt of the rifle into the second guard's throat.
The room exploded into violence.
"Maya! Under the desk! Now!" Adrian yelled over the ringing in my ears.
I didn't hesitate. I scrambled across the hardwood floor, dragging Nora beneath the massive oak kneehole of the antique desk, pressing my hand over her mouth to muffle her terrified sobs. "Shh, baby, Mommy's got you, I've got you," I whispered frantically against her hair.
The third guard drew a sidearm, aiming at Adrian’s back.
"Adrian, behind you!" I screamed.
Adrian spun, catching the guard's wrist, twisting the joint until bone snapped. The gun clattered to the floor. Adrian delivered a savage elbow to the man's jaw, dropping him like a sack of stones.
He turned around, chest heaving, his dark eyes ablaze. The legendary Adrian Kane—the man who had built a ruthless international empire before withdrawing from the world—was back. The reclusive ghost was gone; in his place stood an apex predator.
He looked toward the doorway.
Julian was gone. He had fled into the corridor during the chaos.
Adrian tossed the spent assault rifle aside, scooped up the guard’s dropped 9mm handgun from the floor, checked the magazine with cold efficiency, and racked the slide.
He walked over to the desk, kneeling down to look at us. His breathing was heavy, a smear of blood across his cheek from the lead guard's nose, but his eyes were remarkably clear.
"Are you hit?" he asked me, his voice urgently scanning my body, then Nora’s.
"No," I gasped, my whole body shaking. "We're okay. We're okay."
Nora peeked out from behind my arm, tears streaming down her pink cheeks. She looked at the blood on Adrian’s face, then reached out a trembling little hand and touched his chin.
"Boo-boo?" she whispered softly.
Adrian froze. The savage fury in his face shattered, replaced by an expression of profound, aching reverence. He leaned his face into her tiny palm, closing his eyes for a heartbeat.
"It's okay, Nora," he said, his voice softer than I thought possible for a man who had just dismantled three armed guards with his bare hands. "Daddy's okay."
He looked up at me, the gravity of the word hanging between us like lightning.
"Julian has twenty men in this house," Adrian said, standing and extending a hand to pull me up. "He knows the game is up. If the board sees me alive and lucid with my rightful heir, his proxy is void, and he faces life in prison for conspiracy to commit murder. He won't let any of us walk out of this estate alive."
"The service stairs?" I suggested, clutching Nora to my chest. "The garden gate in the kitchen?"
"Sealed," Adrian said, shaking his head. "Julian controls the perimeter. There's only one way out of this house alive."
"How?"
Adrian looked toward the balcony doors that led down to the central grand staircase—the direct path to the first-floor ballroom.
"We go downstairs," Adrian said coldly. "In front of thirty international dignitaries, the chief of police, and the entire board of directors. Julian can't massacre thirty billionaires without starting a war. We drag this into the light."
He handed me a small, brass master key.

"Stay directly behind me, Maya," Adrian said, his jaw tightening into iron. "If anyone raises a hand toward either of you, I will kill them."
