Chapter 10

Two weeks later, the Kane estate felt like a completely different world.
The heavy charcoal curtains had been ripped down from the master wing, letting brilliant morning sunlight flood the polished oak floors. The dead lilies had been replaced by fresh yellow sunflowers—Nora’s favorite. The sound of children's laughter echoed through the grand corridors, chasing away three years of ghosts.
I stood on the stone veranda overlooking the rolling green hills of the estate, holding a cup of hot coffee. Down on the manicured lawn, Adrian was running in circles, holding Nora up like an airplane while she giggled uncontrollably.
He looked ten years younger. His hair was trimmed, his beard neatly groomed, wearing a simple gray cashmere sweater and jeans. The reclusive monster of the Kane estate was gone, replaced by a father learning how to love again.
Adrian gently set Nora down on the grass, where she immediately ran over to play with Snow, the white cat that had started it all.
Adrian walked up the stone steps toward me, a warm, genuine smile on his face.
"She ate four pancakes," Adrian said, shaking his head with a quiet chuckle. "I didn't know a three-year-old human could physically hold that much syrup."
"She gets that from her mother," I replied with a soft smile.
Adrian’s expression softened. He reached out and gently placed his hand over mine on the stone railing.
"Maya," he said, his voice sincere and deep. "The lawyers finalized the legal guardianship papers this morning. You are legally recognized as Nora’s co-guardian and mother. You will never have to work a day in your life, but... I don't want you to leave."
I looked at him, my heart fluttering. "Adrian..."
"You risked your life for my daughter," Adrian said, looking deeply into my eyes. "You protected her when the whole world wanted her dead. You gave me my life back. This estate... this family... it needs you. I need you. Stay with us."
Before I could answer, an elderly butler approached the veranda carrying a silver tray.
"Pardon the interruption, Mr. Kane," the butler said quietly. "A courier just delivered this to the front gate. It is marked urgent and strictly confidential."
On the tray sat a small, unpadded manila envelope with no return address.
Adrian frowned, picking up the envelope. Written on the front in dark, flowing cursive was a single line:
*FOR ADRIAN AND MAYA.*
My breath caught in my throat. I recognized that handwriting.
Adrian tore open the envelope.
Inside was a single printed photograph and a handwritten note.
Adrian slipped the photograph out first.
It was a picture taken from across the street of the Kane estate, showing Adrian, Nora, and me standing on the lawn just three days ago.
And in the foreground of the photo, reflected in the side mirror of a dark sedan, was a woman wearing dark sunglasses and a beige trench coat.
A woman with the unmistakable, sharp jawline of Evelyn Kane.
Adrian’s hands began to shake violently. He unfolded the note.
The handwriting was identical to the message in Nora's locket.
*Julian wasn't the mastermind, Adrian. He was just the pawn. The real architect is still inside Kane Global. Protect our daughter. I will come for her when the blood stops flowing.*
*— Evelyn.*
Adrian looked up from the note, staring out at the perimeter gates in sheer, paralyzed shock.

The nightmare hadn't ended.
It had only just begun.
