Chapter 1

For three years, Adrian Kane had forbidden anyone from entering the locked room where he mourned the wife he believed had burned to death. Then my three-year-old daughter wandered inside, climbed into the terrifying man's lap, and revealed the impossible: around her neck hung the one-of-a-kind locket Adrian had placed on his dead wife's throat on their wedding day.
That morning, I had no idea I was walking my child straight into a nightmare.
The call came at 7:40 a.m.
"Preschool is closed until further notice," the director told me. "There's a gas smell in the east wing. The fire department won't clear the building."
I stood frozen at my kitchen counter with one shoe on.
"For how long?"
"We don't know."
My stomach tightened.
I called six babysitters. Fever. No answer. Dentist appointment. Booked. Booked. The last one could come Thursday.
It was Tuesday.
And of all Tuesdays, every employee at the Kane estate had been ordered to stay until midnight. The council was meeting. Dinner for thirty. Crystal glasses, polished silver, flawless service.
Missing work wasn't an option.
I looked at the clock, then at Nora sitting on the kitchen floor in striped pajamas, calmly feeding toast to a plastic dinosaur.
"Nora."
"Mm?"
"Get your boots."
The Kane estate wasn't really a house. It rose from the hills like a fortress built to keep secrets inside.
I'd worked there eight months, long enough to learn its invisible boundaries by watching where everyone else was terrified to step.
Especially upstairs.
I settled Nora in the servants' room beside the kitchen corridor. I made her a little nest on the narrow cot with warm milk, three cookies, colored pencils, her battered stuffed rabbit, and her favorite book about a bear who couldn't sleep.
Then I knelt and gripped both her tiny hands.
"Three rules, baby."
She nodded solemnly.
"Stay in this room."
"Stay in this room," she repeated.
"Never wander into the main house."
"Never wander."
I hesitated before the last one.
"And never, ever go near the big oak door upstairs."
Her innocent eyes searched mine.
Everyone on the estate knew about that door.
For three years, nobody had crossed its threshold. Guards had orders to shoot anyone who tried. Adrian Kane had sealed himself inside after his wife, Evelyn, supposedly burned to death in a car he was never allowed to see.
Nora raised her pinky.
"I promise, Mama."
I hooked mine around hers.
Hours later, a white cat named Snow slipped through that forbidden doorway.
Nora followed because, in her three-year-old mind, Snow looked cold.
Adrian Kane lifted his head.
My daughter walked toward the most feared man in the house, climbed onto his knees... and fell asleep.
Then she shifted.
A silver locket slipped from beneath her collar.
Adrian went completely still.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Evelyn holding a newborn baby.
On the back, written in his dead wife's handwriting, were four words:
HER NAME IS NORA.
"Who is your mother?" Adrian whispered.

And downstairs, someone suddenly started running.
