Chapter 7 - The Mountain Safehouse

The safehouse was a massive, modern fortress hidden deep within the snow-covered peaks of the mountains.
It looked like a luxury ski lodge, but it was fortified with bulletproof glass, steel doors, and dozens of armed guards.
When we walked through the heavy front doors, the tension in my chest instantly evaporated.
Leah ran across the plush living room carpet, abandoning her toys to launch herself into my waiting arms.
"Mama! Dada!" she cheered, her voice completely normal and vibrant, entirely cured of her traumatic silence.
Damian knelt down beside us, his massive frame looking incredibly gentle as he stroked Leah's dark curls.
"We are safe here, little one," Damian promised, kissing her forehead with a fierce, protective love.
He had raised her as his own, and discovering her true parentage hadn't diminished his love for her at all.
If anything, it had solidified his resolve to be the father she absolutely deserved.
Later that evening, after Leah had fallen asleep in a secure, windowless bedroom, Damian and I sat by the roaring fireplace.
He poured us both a glass of expensive red wine, the firelight dancing across the sharp angles of his face.
"I never thought I would hear her speak," Damian confessed softly, staring into the flickering flames.
"The specialists told me she was suffering from profound psychological trauma, but they never knew the root cause."
I took a slow sip of the wine, feeling the warmth spread through my exhausted, trembling body.
"She knew she didn't belong," I theorized, looking at the man who had unknowingly stolen my world.
"Children have an incredible intuition. She knew her real mother was missing, and the grief kept her silent."
Damian turned to look at me, his dark eyes filled with a heavy, unspoken sorrow and deep admiration.
"And you brought her back to life with a single touch," he murmured, his voice dropping to a husky whisper.
The space between us suddenly felt incredibly charged, crackling with an undeniable, magnetic tension.
We had been violently thrown together by tragedy, but we were bonding over a fierce, shared love for a child.
"What happens tomorrow, Damian?" I asked, forcing myself to focus on the terrifying reality of our situation.
"Tomorrow, I remove the cancer from my family," he replied coldly, the mafia boss seamlessly returning.
"Lorenzo will try to strike first when he realizes Dr. Vance has vanished."
He leaned closer to me, his scent of sandalwood and danger completely wrapping around my senses.
"You stay here, hidden and safe. Do not open the doors for anyone except me."
"I am not a fragile porcelain doll, Damian," I argued firmly, refusing to be pushed aside.
"I fought for two years to survive my grief. I am not going to cower in a room while you fight for our daughter."
Damian stared at my defiant expression, a slow, incredibly attractive smile spreading across his handsome face.
"You are a terrifyingly fierce woman, Elara," he complimented softly, reaching out to gently tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear.

"And I think I am dangerously drawn to that."
My breath hitched, and for a fleeting moment, the war outside completely ceased to exist.
