Chapter 17 - The Stolen Heir

The estate was in absolute ruins. The beautiful silk curtains were shredded by bullets, the marble floors stained with the violent consequences of the night. Damian’s men had secured the perimeter and neutralized the immediate threat, but the cost was devastating.
Silas had managed to escape in the chaos, slipping away into the Chicago night before Damian could tear him apart. But the true horror wasn't the property damage; it was the realization that Victor Moretti's men hadn't just come to capture us. They had come to steal.
As Maria tried to calm Leah and Leo in the fortified kitchen, I walked through the shattered remains of Damian's study. The hidden safe behind his desk had been blown wide open.
It didn't contain money or gold; Damian kept those in secure offshore accounts. The safe contained something far more dangerous.
"What did they take?" I asked, my voice trembling as Damian stared at the empty steel box, his hands clenched so tightly his knuckles were bleeding.
He turned to me, his face completely devoid of color, looking older and more terrifying than I had ever seen him.
"They took the black ledger," Damian answered, his voice a hollow, lethal whisper. "When I dismantled Lorenzo's empire, I kept a record of every corrupt politician, every bribed judge, and every federal agent on our payroll. It was my leverage to ensure my family was never touched."
My heart sank into my stomach. If Victor Moretti had that ledger, he didn't just have power; he had the ability to completely destroy Damian's legitimate life. He could expose everything, sending Damian to federal prison for the rest of his life and leaving me and the children completely defenseless.
The encrypted phone on Damian's desk suddenly began to ring. The shrill sound cut through the silence like a knife. Damian stared at it for a long moment before pressing the speaker button.
"A beautiful home you have, Damian," Victor's voice purred smoothly through the speaker, accompanied by the distinct sound of a lighter clicking. "It's a shame about the mess. But I have your insurance policy now."

Damian placed both hands on the ruined desk, leaning into the microphone. "Name your price, Victor."
Victor chuckled, a dark, sinister sound. "I don't want money. I want you to walk away. Surrender all your legitimate businesses to my shell companies by midnight tomorrow, or this ledger goes to the FBI. Your choice, old friend. The empire, or your freedom."
