Chapter 18 - Descent into Darkness

The ultimatum hung over us like an executioner's blade. Surrendering the businesses meant giving the Moretti Syndicate a massive, legitimate front to launder billions of dollars in blood money. It would make them the most powerful criminal organization in the country.

But fighting them meant risking federal indictments that would tear our family apart forever.

For the first time since I had met him, Damian looked completely defeated. He sat heavily in his leather chair, staring at a framed photograph of Leah and Leo on his desk.

"I'll sign the papers," Damian said quietly, his voice broken. "I can rebuild wealth, Elara. But I cannot survive losing you and the kids to a prison sentence."

I walked around the desk, standing over him. The quiet, grieving woman he had saved five years ago would have agreed and run away. But I was Elara Caruso now.

"No," I said firmly, reaching down to close the laptop he had opened to contact his lawyers. Damian looked up at me in shock.

"If you give Victor this power, he will never stop. He will bleed us dry, and eventually, he will come for the children anyway to ensure you never fight back."

Damian’s eyes searched mine, looking for the limits of my courage and finding absolutely none. "What are you suggesting?" he asked, a dangerous spark reigniting in his dark eyes.

"I am suggesting we stop playing defense," I answered, leaning down to meet his gaze. "Victor thinks you're a domesticated animal. He thinks your legitimate life made you soft. You need to remind him exactly why you were the king of this city."

Damian stood up, his massive frame towering over me, a terrifying, beautiful smile pulling at the corner of his lips. The mafia boss had fully returned.

"Silas is the weak link," Damian strategized, his mind immediately shifting into war mode. "Victor won't trust Silas, but he needs him to navigate my old territories. If we find Silas, we find the ledger."

We didn't rely on police or lawyers. Damian activated his most ruthless, dormant sleeper cells across the city. Within six hours, a loyalist spotted Silas hiding in a dilapidated motel on the outskirts of the industrial district.

Damian geared up in heavy tactical armor, loading a suppressed weapon with chilling precision. "I will be back before dawn," he promised, kissing me deeply.

"Bring him to his knees, Damian," I whispered against his lips. The descent into darkness was terrifying, but this time, we were walking into the shadows completely together.
