Chapter 4 - The Path of Vengeance

The morning sun broke through the heavy storm clouds, casting a golden glow over the Caruso estate.

I sat in a grand, sunlit dining room, watching Leah happily eat pancakes covered in strawberry syrup.

She hadn't let go of my hand since she woke up, her tiny fingers tightly woven through mine.

Every time she looked at me and said "Mama," my heart swelled with an indescribable, overwhelming joy.

But hovering just beyond the joyous reunion was a dark, terrifying reality.

Damian walked into the dining room wearing a tailored black suit that screamed lethal authority.

He looked completely exhausted, carrying a tablet that displayed heavily encrypted security files.

"My men have secured the perimeter of St. Jude's Medical Center," Damian announced, pouring a cup of black coffee.

"Dr. Vance is currently in his office on the fourth floor, entirely unaware that his world is ending."

I looked up at him, my protective instincts instantly flaring into a raging fire.

"I want to come with you," I demanded, surprising myself with the undeniable strength in my own voice.

Damian paused with his coffee cup halfway to his mouth, raising a thick, questioning eyebrow.

"This is not going to be a polite conversation, Elara," he warned me, using my name for the first time.

"He stole my child, handed me a box of fake ashes, and ruined two years of my life," I countered fiercely.

"I have every right to look that monster in the eyes when his kingdom burns."

Damian stared at me for a long moment, a slow, dark smirk of approval pulling at the corner of his lips.

"Very well," he agreed, setting his cup down with a sharp clatter.

"But you stay behind me at all times, and you do exactly as I say."

I nodded, kissing Leah's sticky forehead and handing her over to a trusted, elderly nanny named Maria.

"I will be right back, my sweet girl," I promised, fighting the urge to stay locked in the house with her forever.

"Mama come back," Leah chirped happily, waving her stuffed velvet rabbit at me.

We walked out to the waiting armored SUV, the air thick with anticipation and violent intent.

The drive to the hospital was silent, but the tension between Damian and me was palpable and electric.

We were two grieving parents united by a horrific betrayal, bound together by a child who shared both our lives.

When we arrived at St. Jude's, the hospital staff didn't even try to stop Damian Caruso's entourage.

His heavily armed guards formed a wedge, parting the crowded lobby like the Red Sea.

We stepped into the private elevator, pressing the button for the executive administrative floor.

My heart hammered violently against my ribs, but the presence of the mafia boss beside me made me feel invincible.

The elevator doors slid open, revealing a plush, quiet hallway lined with expensive artwork and mahogany doors.

Damian didn't bother knocking when we reached the office labeled 'Dr. Arthur Vance, Chief of Obstetrics'.

He simply kicked the heavy door open with enough force to shatter the wooden frame.

The monster who had ruined our lives was sitting behind his desk, and he was about to face the devil himself.
