Chapter 21 - ADRIAN CARBONE ADMITTED HE HAD BEEN USEDAdrian arrived at Nora's clinic carrying three cardboard boxes.

Lucia followed him.
She looked furious.
“At him,” she clarified.
“Not you.”
Adrian placed the boxes on a table.
“I screwed up.”
Nora continued writing a patient note.
“Yes.”
“I thought my source was a whistleblower.”
“Yes.”
“I verified the financial records.”
“Did you verify his motive?”
Adrian stopped.
“No.”
Nora looked up.
“Then you verified documents, not truth.”
That landed.
He opened the first box.
Printouts.
Emails.
Anonymous messages.
Bank records.
Samuel had never directly identified himself.
He used intermediaries.
But one digital-payment account connected to the source traced back to a litigation consultant Samuel’s firm retained.
Adrian said:
“He wanted me to publish before the transfer.”
“To create noise.”
“Yes.”
“And Brody?”
“He fed me access logs pointing to Brody.”
Nora closed her eyes.
Perfect.
Samuel had built the story so everyone would fight the easiest person to blame.
Adrian continued:
“There’s more.”
He opened the second box.
Saint Gabriel had not simply paid victims.
It had purchased medical care.
Housing.
College tuition.
Funeral costs.
Hundreds of anonymous payments over thirty years.
Many legitimate.
Some impossible to trace.
But after Giovanni’s stroke, a pattern changed.
Large payments began going to phantom beneficiaries.
The same addresses appeared repeatedly.
Nora frowned.
“These people don't exist.”
“No.”
“How many?”
“Seventy-three.”
Lorenzo entered.
“What?”
Adrian looked at him.
“Seventy-three fake victims.”
The Moretti restitution fund had been looted slowly.
Not fifty-eight million in one dramatic theft.
That morning's transfer was only the final extraction.
Samuel had been stealing for years.
Then Adrian pulled one page from the final box.
“This account received nine million dollars.”
Lorenzo read the name.
His face changed.
Creed Family Healthcare Holdings.
Nora stared.
Healthcare.
“Samuel invested stolen restitution money in nursing facilities?”
Adrian nodded.
“Twenty-two of them.”
Nora's stomach turned.
“Show me.”
He did.
Inspection reports.
Neglect findings.
Understaffing.
Falls.
Pressure sores.
Medication errors.
Facilities earning millions while elderly patients received minimal care.
Giovanni read the files.
His hand began shaking.
Nora understood his horror.
Samuel had stolen money intended for people Giovanni harmed—
and used it to profit from helpless people.
The exact kind of people Nora had built her life protecting.
Giovanni typed:
“DESTROY HIM.”
Lorenzo looked at his father.
“No.”
Giovanni stared.
Lorenzo continued:
“We expose him.”
Nora watched Giovanni.
For a moment, the old Don returned.
Then slowly—
May you like
he moved one finger.
Yes.
