Chapter 19 - ELENA CARBONE DID NOT RUN FROM ANTONIOLucia locked the library doors herself.

“No lawyers.”

Nobody moved.

“No security.”

Matteo left reluctantly.

“No half-truths.”

She looked at Giovanni.

“Why did my mother leave you?”

Giovanni typed:

“ANTONIO THREATENED HER.”

“I know.”

Lucia leaned forward.

“That isn't the whole answer.”

Giovanni looked exhausted.

Nora sat beside him.

“You need to tell her.”

His eyes closed.

Then he began.

In 1987, Antonio had ordered two men to seize Lucia from school.

Not kill her.

Take her.

He wanted leverage over Giovanni.

Elena discovered the plan.

She confronted Giovanni.

Giovanni responded the way he had solved problems then.

With violence.

He found one of Antonio’s men.

Beat him nearly to death.

The second man ran.

Elena saw the aftermath.

Saw Giovanni covered in blood.

Saw the father of her child standing over another human being.

And understood something.

Antonio was not the only danger.

Lucia whispered:

“My mother was afraid of you.”

Yes.

Nora closed her eyes.

Giovanni typed:

“SHE SAID YOU WOULD LEARN VIOLENCE FROM ME.”

Lucia's face changed.

“So she took me away.”

Yes.

“And made you promise not to follow.”

Yes.

“Did she hate you?”

Giovanni stared at the table.

Then:

“NO.”

Lucia laughed bitterly.

“How convenient.”

Giovanni continued:

“WORSE.”

She frowned.

“SHE LOVED ME.”

Silence.

“AND LEFT ANYWAY.”

Lucia stopped.

The sentence cut through every person in the room.

Elena had not left because she felt nothing.

She had left because loving Giovanni did not make living beside Giovanni safe.

Nora looked at Lorenzo.

He understood.

So did she.

Love did not erase consequence.

Lucia sat down.

“My mother never told me this.”

Giovanni typed:

“SHE WANTED YOU FREE OF ME.”

“Were you angry?”

“YES.”

“Did you respect her choice?”

A long pause.

Then:

“EVENTUALLY.”

Lucia almost smiled despite herself.

Then Giovanni typed something else.

“YOUR MOTHER SAVED MY LIFE.”

Lucia frowned.

“How?”

“BY TAKING YOU.”

She stared.

Giovanni continued:

“IF YOU STAYED I WOULD NEVER CHANGE.”

Tears filled Lucia's eyes.

For the first time, she reached for his hand.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But contact.

Across the room, Lorenzo looked away.

Nora knew why.

All his life Lorenzo had believed his father changed after the stroke.

The truth was harder.

May you like

Giovanni had wanted to change for decades.

He had simply been too powerful to admit how much it would cost.
