Chapter 17 - THE MAN WHO NEVER NEEDED A GUNSamuel called Lorenzo that night.

No blocked number.
No distorted voice.
Just Samuel.
Calm as always.
“Lorenzo.”
“Where are you?”
“That isn't important.”
“You stole fifty-eight million dollars.”
Samuel sighed.
“You've inherited your father's habit of reducing complicated things into accusations.”
Giovanni sat beside Lorenzo.
Nora stood near the window.
The call was being recorded.
Samuel continued.
“That money was never legally clean.”
“It belonged to victims.”
“It belonged to Giovanni.”
“He designated it for restitution.”
“Privately.”
Samuel sounded almost amused.
“Do you understand what happens if prosecutors establish that Giovanni maintained undisclosed accounts linked to historical criminal acts?”
Lorenzo said nothing.
“Asset seizure. Tax exposure. Civil claims.”
Samuel paused.
“Possibly against every legitimate Moretti company.”
Nora understood.
Samuel had positioned himself as the only man capable of preventing financial collapse.
“What do you want?” Lorenzo asked.
“Control.”
“Of?”
“The holding companies.”
Lorenzo laughed.
Samuel did not.
“I want you to resign as chairman.”
“No.”
“Then tomorrow morning I file an action challenging Giovanni's competence when he created the trusts and transferring management to the legal custodians.”
“You.”
“Yes.”
Giovanni's finger moved violently.
Samuel heard the mechanical sound.
“Is he there?”
Lorenzo looked at his father.
“Yes.”
Samuel was quiet.
Then:
“Hello, Giovanni.”
Giovanni typed.
The synthetic voice spoke.
“THIEF.”
Samuel laughed softly.
“No.”
His voice changed.
For the first time, the warmth disappeared.
“I spent thirty years cleaning your mistakes.”
Giovanni stared.
“I turned extortion money into construction companies.”
“I kept Lorenzo out of prison.”
“I gave your family respectability.”
Samuel's breathing sharpened.
“And then a pregnant maid walks into your house, gives you soup, and suddenly you decide morality matters?”
Nora went still.
So did Lorenzo.
Samuel continued:
“You were going to dismantle everything men like me spent our lives protecting.”
Giovanni typed:
“MY MONEY.”
Samuel snapped:
“My life.”
Silence.
There it was.
Not greed alone.
Resentment.
Samuel Creed had never been a Moretti.
Never feared.
Never remembered.
He had spent decades making powerful men survivable and watching them receive the credit.
Samuel whispered:
“I made your empire legal.”
Giovanni answered:
“YOU MADE YOURSELF RICH.”
Samuel went quiet.
Then:
“Resign, Lorenzo.”
“No.”
“Think carefully.”
“I did.”
“Your wife's center will lose every donor by the end of the week.”
Nora stepped closer to the phone.
“Then I’ll find new donors.”
Samuel stopped.
“Nora.”
“You always pronounced my name like I was a charity case.”
“You were.”
“No.”
She smiled without humor.
“I was the only person in that house you underestimated more than Giovanni.”
The call ended.
Ten minutes later, Lorenzo received notice.
May you like
Samuel had filed an emergency petition claiming Giovanni Moretti lacked the mental capacity to control his assets.
The man who had helped free Giovanni from silence was now going to court to declare that silence proof he could not speak for himself.
