Chapter 7 - VANESSA'S LAST CONFESSION

Vanessa woke in the hospital two days later.
The police had stationed officers outside her room, and a detective was waiting beside the window.
She looked at the bandage around her waist.
"Did my father die?"
"No," the detective replied. "He's in custody."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
For the first time in her life, she felt neither protected nor controlled by him.
Only free.
When Adrian and Elena arrived, Vanessa began crying.
"I know you hate me."
Elena remained silent.
Vanessa looked at her.
"I helped keep you there. I visited you. I told you Adrian had forgotten you. I knew you were suffering, and I kept coming back because my father said it was necessary."
"Why?" Elena asked quietly.
Vanessa's face twisted.
"Because I wanted the life he promised me. I wanted to marry Adrian. I wanted to be the woman everyone respected. And I thought if I obeyed my father, I could have everything."
"You had Grace."
"I know."
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"That's what makes it unforgivable. I loved her, but I let my father use her as a weapon. I knew the adoption papers were false. I knew the records had been altered. I told myself I was saving her from a dangerous family."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"You knew Grace was Elena's daughter?"
"Not at first. My father told me the baby had been abandoned. When I discovered the truth, he threatened to take Grace away from me unless I cooperated."
Elena looked at her steadily.
"And you believed him."
Vanessa nodded.
"I was afraid."
"So was I," Elena said. "Every day. But I still tried to escape."
Vanessa lowered her head.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
"Good," Adrian replied. "Because you cannot demand it."
He placed a document on the bedside table.
It was a statement detailing Vanessa's involvement in the conspiracy.
"The police want your testimony. If you tell the truth, the court can consider your cooperation. But you must accept responsibility for what you did."
Vanessa read the document.
"I will."
Elena turned toward the door.
Vanessa's voice stopped her.
"Please. Can I see Grace?"
Elena stood motionless.
For three years, Vanessa had been the only mother Grace remembered. Elena could not pretend that bond meant nothing, even after everything Vanessa had done.
But neither could she ignore the harm.
"Not today," Elena said. "Grace needs time to understand who she is and what happened."
Vanessa nodded through her tears.
"I understand."
"One day, if she wants to see you, I won't lie to her about you. But I won't lie about what you did, either."
Vanessa covered her face.
"That's fair."
Before they left, she handed Adrian a small envelope.
"My father gave me this the day Grace came home from the hospital. He said it was proof that everything had been handled legally."
Inside was a photograph of Robert Sterling standing beside a man Adrian recognized from his father's old security team.
The date on the photograph was the night of Elena's accident.
On the back, someone had written:
THE SECOND CAR WAS NEVER RECOVERED.
Adrian stared at the words.
"What second car?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know. But my father was terrified of this photograph. He told me never to mention it."
Elena took the picture.
Her expression changed.
"I remember another vehicle."
Adrian turned to her.
"What?"
"After the crash, before I lost consciousness, I saw a black sedan behind the truck. It stopped beside my car."
She looked at the photograph again.
"The driver wasn't Robert."
Adrian's blood ran cold.
"Then who was it?"
May you like
Elena looked up.
"Someone who worked for your father. Someone who was supposed to be dead."
