Chapter 1 - THE WIFE WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

The grandfather clock struck eight when Hannah Reed pushed open the mansion's front doors.
Rain dripped from her hair, and her uniform was soaked at the shoulders. She supported a frail woman wearing a gray coat over a pale blue hospital gown.
"Mr. Moretti," Hannah whispered, "please don't call security."
Adrian Moretti looked up from the wedding arrangements spread across his desk.
At thirty-five, Adrian had become one of the most feared men in New York. His family controlled legitimate businesses, shipping companies, and a criminal empire that few people dared challenge.
But inside his mansion, he had recently allowed himself to believe he might finally have a peaceful future.
His wedding to Vanessa Sterling was scheduled for three weeks later.
Vanessa sat beside him on the sofa, examining flowers for the ceremony.
Then she saw the woman beside Hannah.
The color drained from her face.
"No."
The stranger lifted her head.
Vanessa stumbled backward.
"No, no, no!"
She dropped to her knees.
"PLEASE! JUST LEAVE! I'LL GIVE YOU ANYTHING!"
Adrian stood.
"Vanessa? What the hell is wrong with you?"
The woman slowly removed her coat.
Long dark hair fell across her shoulders. A thin scar marked the skin above her right eyebrow. Her face was thinner than Adrian remembered, and her eyes were filled with exhaustion.
But he recognized those eyes.
He had looked into them every morning for five years.
"Elena?"
His glass slipped from his hand.
It shattered against the floor.
Elena Moretti, his wife, had supposedly died three years earlier in a highway accident. Adrian remembered the closed coffin, the funeral, and the unbearable silence that followed.
He had never been allowed to see her body.
Doctors said the injuries were too severe.
Vanessa had held his hand throughout the funeral.
Now Elena stood before him, alive.
"Hello, Adrian," she whispered.
He approached slowly, afraid that one wrong movement might destroy the impossible sight.
"I watched them bury you."
"You buried an empty coffin."
Adrian stopped.
"What?"
Elena began to cry.
"Someone made sure you never saw my face."
He turned toward Vanessa.
"You knew?"
Vanessa shook her head violently.
"Adrian, she's confused. Look at her! She's been drugged!"
Elena flinched at the word.
Adrian stepped between them.
"Don't speak to her like that."
Hannah guided Elena toward an armchair. The woman struggled to sit upright, her fingers trembling against the fabric.
"I found her in a private medical facility outside the city," Hannah explained. "She was registered as Sarah Miller. She had a bracelet hidden beneath her mattress with her real name written on a piece of paper."
Elena reached into her coat and produced a folded document.
"This is the authorization they used to keep me there."
Adrian examined it.
His name appeared beneath the words Consent to Continued Inpatient Treatment.
But the signature was wrong.
"I never signed this."
"I know," Elena whispered. "I found out when I heard a nurse talking about your wedding."
Adrian looked up.
"Why didn't you escape sooner?"
"Because they told me you would be killed if I tried to contact you. They showed me photographs of your house, your office, even your car. They knew everything about you."
She gripped his wrist.
"Then yesterday, I heard them planning to move me. One of the nurses said the transfer would be my last."
Vanessa rose unsteadily.
"She's lying!"
Elena turned toward her.
"You visited me."
Vanessa froze.
"You came to my room wearing a black coat. You told me Adrian had stopped loving me. You said he was going to marry you."
Adrian stared at his fiancée.
"How many times?"
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"Adrian, please—"
"HOW MANY TIMES?"
"Twice!"
Elena shook her head.
"Four times."
The room fell silent.
Then Adrian's phone vibrated on the table.
The caller ID displayed a name he recognized immediately.
DR. RICHARD HALE.
The physician who had signed Elena's death certificate.
Elena went white.
"That's him."
Adrian picked up the phone.
Before he could answer, Elena whispered:
"Adrian, he didn't just fake my death. He has a recording of the man who ordered it."
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
She was crying now.
"Don't answer," she begged. "Please, don't answer that phone."
Adrian pressed the call button.
"Dr. Hale," he said coldly. "You have five minutes to explain why my dead wife is sitting in my living room."
A pause followed.
Then a man's voice answered.
"Mr. Moretti, I wondered how long it would take you to discover the truth."
Adrian tightened his grip on the phone.
"Who ordered Elena's disappearance?"
The doctor exhaled.
"Your father."
Adrian's expression changed.
"My father has been dead for six years."
"I know," Hale replied. "That's why the person who inherited his secrets is coming to your mansion tonight."
The call ended.
Outside, headlights swept across the windows.
A black car was pulling into the driveway.
Elena grabbed Adrian's hand.
"That's him."
"Who?"
She looked toward the entrance.
"The man who kept me alive just long enough to make sure I could never tell you what happened the night our daughter was born."
Adrian stopped breathing.
"Our daughter?"
May you like
Elena began sobbing.
"Adrian, they told you our baby died, too."
