Chapter 2 - THE CHILD WHO NEVER HAD A GRAVE

Adrian stared at Elena as if the floor had disappeared beneath him.
"Our daughter?"
Elena nodded.
"I gave birth three years ago, the night of the accident."
He shook his head.
"No. You were pregnant, but the doctors said—"
"They said our baby died before the delivery."
"That's what Hale told me."
"He lied."
Elena reached beneath the hospital gown and removed a small plastic envelope, yellowed with age.
Inside was a photograph of a newborn girl with dark hair and a tiny crescent-shaped birthmark near her left shoulder.
Adrian touched the photograph with trembling fingers.
"Where is she?"
"I don't know."
The answer nearly broke him.
Elena explained that she had gone into labor several weeks early. Adrian had been attending a meeting across town when her car was struck on the highway.
She remembered headlights behind her, a violent impact, and the sound of metal twisting.
When she woke, she was in a private hospital room.
A nurse told her that she had suffered severe injuries and that her baby had not survived.
But Elena heard an infant crying in the corridor.
Later, she saw a nurse carrying a newborn wrapped in a white blanket.
The baby had a crescent-shaped mark on her shoulder.
Elena tried to reach her.
Two men restrained her and administered a sedative.
When she awoke, she had been transferred to another facility.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" Adrian asked, his voice cracking.
"I tried. I wrote letters. I begged the nurses to contact you. They told me every letter had been delivered."
"None ever reached me."
"I know that now."
Elena looked at Vanessa.
"Your fiancée came to my room and showed me photographs of Adrian with her. She said he had married her in secret and that my daughter had died because I was too weak to protect her."
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Adrian turned toward her.
"You told Elena I had married you?"
"I was told to make her believe there was no reason to escape."
"By whom?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"By my father."
Robert Sterling was a powerful businessman whose company had been intertwined with the Moretti empire for decades. He had presented Vanessa's engagement to Adrian as a way to unite their legitimate businesses.
Adrian had suspected that Robert wanted influence.
He had never imagined that the man might have helped destroy his marriage.
"Where is your father now?" Adrian demanded.
Vanessa hesitated.
"He left the country three years ago."
"Convenient."
"He told me the hospital was treating Elena for a psychiatric condition. He said she had become dangerous after the accident."
"And you believed him?"
"I wanted to believe him."
Elena looked at her with quiet contempt.
"You didn't want to know the truth."
Vanessa had no answer.
Hannah stepped forward.
"There's something else, sir."
She opened a small notebook she had taken from the facility.
"One of the nurses helped Elena escape. She gave her this before she left."
Adrian examined the pages.
They contained patient transfer dates, medication records, and payments to a company registered in the Cayman Islands.
One entry had been circled.
PATIENT E.M. — TRANSFER APPROVED BY R.S.
Below it was a date and a signature.
Robert Sterling.
Adrian's face hardened.
"Where did you get this?"
"The nurse said she was afraid she'd be killed if she kept it," Hannah replied. "She gave it to Elena, then helped her leave through the laundry entrance."
Elena took a shaky breath.
"There's a second page."
Adrian turned it over.
A handwritten note appeared at the bottom.
The child is safe. She is being raised under the name Grace Sterling. Do not permit the mother to make contact.
Adrian read the sentence twice.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
"Grace?"
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Adrian, I can explain."
"Who is Grace Sterling?"
Vanessa's voice broke.
"My daughter."
Elena made a small, wounded sound.
Adrian stared at the woman he had planned to marry.
"You have a daughter?"
Vanessa nodded.
"She's three."
"How?"
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"Because my father told me the baby was abandoned. He said Elena had died and the child had been left without a family."
Elena's hands shook.
"You're raising my daughter?"
Vanessa began to cry.
"I didn't know she was yours."
But Elena was no longer looking at Vanessa.
She was staring at the photograph of the newborn.
"Grace," she whispered. "My little girl."
Then Adrian noticed the final line in the notebook.
The child must remain with the Sterling family until the inheritance agreement is executed.
He looked at Vanessa.
"What inheritance agreement?"
She could barely speak.
"My father said Grace would inherit a controlling share of the Moretti shipping company when she turned eighteen."
Adrian went cold.
His father had been dead for six years.

The shipping company was worth billions.
And someone had stolen his daughter to control it.
