Chapter 6 - THE DOCTOR WHO SOLD A FAMILY

Richard Hale was hiding in a rundown motel near the interstate.

He had shaved his beard, dyed his hair, and registered under a false name. But he had made one mistake.

He had used a phone number connected to the private clinic.

Marco traced the call.

Adrian arrived with two trusted men and a police investigator. He had agreed to cooperate with law enforcement rather than risk turning the search into another private war.

Hale tried to escape through the back door.

He made it as far as the parking lot before Adrian blocked his path.

"Dr. Hale."

The physician stopped.

For a moment, fear flickered across his face.

Then he tried to smile.

"Mr. Moretti. I can explain everything."

"Start with the death certificate."

Hale swallowed.

"I was pressured."

"By my father?"

"By your father and Robert Sterling."

"Did you know Elena was alive when I buried her?"

Hale looked down.

"Yes."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Did you know they were keeping my daughter from me?"

"Yes."

The word landed like a stone.

Adrian's hands trembled with anger.

"Why?"

Hale's face crumpled.

"Money. At first, it was money. Then they threatened my family. Your father controlled the hospital's funding. Sterling controlled the clinic. I told myself the arrangement would last a few weeks."

"Three years."

"I know."

"You signed a death certificate for a living woman."

Hale began to cry.

"I know."

The police investigator stepped forward.

"Where is the original record?"

Hale reached into his jacket and produced a small flash drive.

"Everything is here. The delivery records, the transfer orders, the payments, and the recording of the original meeting."

Adrian stared at the device.

"Why keep it?"

"Because I knew one day they'd decide I was no longer useful."

The investigator took the drive.

"You're coming with us."

Hale did not resist.

As officers led him away, he turned toward Adrian.

"Your father wasn't only interested in the company. He wanted to control who inherited it. He believed Elena would persuade you to leave the organization and that your daughter would be raised outside his influence."

"So he decided to steal my family."

Hale lowered his head.

"Yes."

Adrian watched the police car disappear into the rain.

He had imagined that finding the truth would bring relief.

Instead, it left him with a terrible understanding: his father had loved power more than he had loved his own son.

When Adrian returned to the mansion, Elena was waiting in the garden.

Grace was asleep upstairs.

"Did you find him?" she asked.

"Yes. He gave the police everything."

Elena looked toward the darkened windows.

"Then it's over?"

"The truth is finally out. But the consequences are only beginning."

She nodded.

"I don't know how to live a normal life anymore."

Adrian moved closer.

"We don't have to know everything tonight."

Elena studied him.

"You've changed."

"I'm trying to."

"You used to believe that every problem could be solved by making someone afraid of you."

He gave a sad smile.

"That was easier than admitting I was afraid myself."

Elena took his hand.

"I don't need the man who could frighten an entire city. I need the man who used to sit beside me and read terrible detective novels until two in the morning."

Adrian laughed softly.

"I still have those books."

"Then perhaps we can begin there."

He leaned forward, but stopped before kissing her.

"May I?"

Elena looked into his eyes.

For three years, she had dreamed of seeing him again. Yet she had also spent those years fearing that the man she loved might have changed beyond recognition.

She touched his cheek.

"Not yet."

He nodded immediately.

May you like

"Whenever you're ready."

That answer meant more to her than any promise of revenge ever could.
