Chapter 9

### The Brother Who Returned from the Grave

The gunshot echoed through the terminal's surveillance microphone.

Sophie screamed.

Luca was already moving.

“Get the cars!”

Marcus caught his arm.

“Wait. We don't know who he shot.”

“I don't care!”

“You will if you walk into an ambush.”

Luca forced himself to stop.

On the monitor, Gabriel lowered his weapon. Celeste collapsed behind a stack of crates, clutching her shoulder. Vanessa dragged Sophie toward a metal staircase.

Gabriel shouted something the camera couldn't capture.

Then the screen went black.

Marcus's team reached the terminal within minutes.

Luca entered through a side door with his weapon drawn.

“Gabriel!”

A figure emerged from the shadows.

For a second, Luca saw the brother he had buried. Then he saw the scars, the exhaustion, and the grief etched into his face.

Gabriel looked older than his years.

“Hello, little brother.”

Luca struck him.

The punch sent Gabriel against the wall.

“You let me bury you!”

Gabriel wiped blood from his lip.

“I know.”

“You let me believe Isabella was dead!”

“I was trying to keep her alive.”

“You could have told me!”

“Would you have believed me?”

Luca opened his mouth, then stopped.

Gabriel's expression softened.

“Vanessa had people inside your organization. Every message, every phone call, every movement was monitored. If I'd contacted you, she would have found Isabella.”

Luca lowered his weapon.

“Where's my daughter?”

“Vanessa took her upstairs. There's a service bridge connecting the terminal to the old ferry office.”

“Why didn't you stop her?”

“I tried.”

Gabriel's voice broke.

“She has the original adoption files. She knows where Maya was hidden, and she threatened to kill Sophie if I didn't hand over the evidence.”

“Where is Isabella?”

Gabriel looked toward the upper level.

“She's here.”

Luca went still.

“Alive?”

Gabriel nodded.

“She came to rescue Sophie. Celeste was the one outside your mansion. Isabella was the woman who called through the radio.”

Luca rushed up the stairs.

He found Isabella in a locked office, pale and trembling, with a bandage wrapped around her forearm.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then she whispered, “Luca.”

He crossed the room and pulled her into his arms.

She clung to him as if she had been holding herself together for three years and could finally stop.

“I thought you were dead,” he said against her hair.

“I know.”

“I searched everywhere.”

“I know.”

“Why didn't you come home?”

Isabella pulled back.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of Vanessa?”

“Of what she had become. Of the people protecting her. Of what would happen to Sophie if she knew where I was.”

Luca held her face between his hands.

“You should have trusted me.”

“I tried. But every time I reached out, someone knew before I could speak to you. I didn't know whether you were being watched or whether someone had turned you against me.”

He closed his eyes.

“I would never have hurt you.”

“I know that now.”

A small sound came from the staircase.

“Mommy?”

Isabella turned.

Sophie stood in the doorway, held by one of Marcus's guards.

For a heartbeat, she seemed afraid to move.

Then she ran.

“Mommy!”

Isabella dropped to her knees and caught her daughter.

“Oh, my baby.”

Sophie buried her face in Isabella's neck.

“You came back!”

“I never stopped loving you.”

“Why didn't you come home?”

Isabella's tears fell into Sophie's hair.

“Because I made a terrible mistake. I thought keeping my distance would keep you safe. I should have found a better way.”

Sophie pulled back.

“Will you leave again?”

Isabella looked at Luca.

Then she held her daughter tighter.

“Not without telling you why.”

Across the terminal, Vanessa was attempting to escape through a loading bay.

Marcus intercepted her.

She stood frozen beneath the overhead lights, her crimson dress torn and her hair disheveled.

“Move,” she ordered.

Marcus didn't.

“Mr. Moretti would like a word.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Which one?”

“Both.”

Luca arrived with Isabella and Sophie.

Vanessa stared at the family.

For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.

“You can't prove anything,” she said. “Celeste arranged the appearances. Gabriel staged his death. Isabella disappeared voluntarily. And Emma stole private documents from my property.”

Isabella stepped forward.

“I have the hospital records, the payment ledger, and your recorded threats.”

Vanessa's smile faltered.

“You think anyone will believe you?”

Maya emerged from behind Gabriel.

“I will.”

Vanessa stared at her biological daughter.

For the first time, she seemed unable to find words.

Maya held up the original birth certificate.

“You told me I was dead. You told everyone I was dead. But you were the one who made sure I never had a chance to know my family.”

Vanessa's expression twisted.

“I did what I had to do.”

“No,” Maya said. “You did what protected you.”

Marcus's men took Vanessa into custody while the authorities arrived with warrants obtained from the evidence collected over the previous days.

But as officers escorted her away, Vanessa turned toward Luca.

“You think this ends with me?”

Luca said nothing.

She smiled.

“Ask Gabriel who ordered the warehouse fire. Ask Isabella who signed the first adoption transfer. And ask your father why the Moretti family kept the original files hidden.”

Gabriel's face changed.

Isabella went pale.

Vanessa leaned toward Luca as the officers pulled her away.

“Your family didn't just help me, Luca. They built the system.”

The doors closed behind her.

For the first time in three years, Isabella was home.

But the truth had opened a wound far older than her disappearance.

And Gabriel knew exactly where it led.
