Chapter 6

### The Daughter Hidden in Plain Sight

For several seconds, Luca couldn't move.

Maya stood beneath the flickering station light, holding the photograph as though it were the only proof she had ever existed.

“You're saying Vanessa gave birth to you?” he asked.

Maya nodded.

“She was seventeen. Her family told everyone the baby died. But I was transferred to a private facility and adopted under another name.”

“Why would Isabella have been holding you?”

“Because she was the only person who refused to let them erase me.”

Maya explained that Isabella had discovered the adoption network while volunteering at the medical foundation. Vanessa had been involved in the transfer of vulnerable infants, first as a teenager whose family controlled the institution and later as an adult who managed its financial records.

When Isabella recognized inconsistencies in the records, she began collecting evidence.

One of those files contained Maya's original birth certificate.

Another showed that Vanessa had arranged the transfer of her own daughter.

“Isabella promised she would help me find my family,” Maya said. “She visited me secretly. She told me my mother was alive, but she wasn't ready to face me.”

Luca's expression hardened.

“Why would she stay away from you?”

“Because Vanessa knew I existed. She threatened to have me killed if Isabella ever brought me into the open.”

“And what happened three years ago?”

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

“Isabella found proof that Vanessa was planning to marry you. She knew the wedding would give Vanessa control over your estate, your security network, and access to Sophie.”

Luca looked away.

“She could have come to me.”

“She tried.”

Maya reached into her coat and removed a folded letter.

“This was intercepted before it reached you.”

Luca opened it.

The letter was dated three years earlier.

Luca, I have discovered that Vanessa is connected to the foundation's missing children. She has been using our family's name to conceal the transfers. I have evidence, but I need time to protect Sophie.

If anything happens to me, don't believe the police report. Don't trust the people who claim to have found my body.

And don't let Vanessa become Sophie's mother.

Luca's hands tightened around the paper.

“She knew.”

“Yes,” Maya whispered. “And she was right.”

Emma studied Maya's face.

“Where is Isabella now?”

Maya looked toward the station entrance.

“She's in a safe house outside the city. But she won't come back unless she believes Sophie is safe.”

“Then take us to her,” Luca said.

Maya shook her head.

“Not yet. Vanessa knows someone has found the records. If Isabella moves too soon, she'll be exposed.”

Luca's patience snapped.

“She's my wife.”

“And she's my mother.”

The words struck both of them into silence.

Maya lowered her eyes.

“I spent my whole life wondering why my biological mother never came for me. Then Isabella showed me the truth. She was the only person who ever treated me like I mattered.”

Emma stepped closer.

“You don't have to protect her alone.”

Maya looked at her.

“Why are you helping us?”

Emma hesitated.

“Because Sophie deserves her mother. And because I know what it feels like to grow up with questions nobody will answer.”

Luca noticed the emotion in her voice.

But before he could ask about it, Marcus hurried inside.

“Boss, we have movement outside.”

A black SUV had stopped near the station.

Two men stepped out.

Maya went pale.

“They found me.”

Luca grabbed her arm.

“Back exit. Now.”

They ran through the maintenance corridor as the first gunshot shattered a window.

Marcus's men returned fire from the street.

Luca pushed Emma and Maya behind a concrete pillar.

“Stay down!”

A second shot struck the wall above them.

Then everything went quiet.

When Marcus reached them, one of the attackers had been captured. The other had escaped.

The captured man refused to speak.

But he carried a phone containing a recent photograph of Sophie entering her school.

On the screen was a message from an unsaved number.

BRING ME THE GIRL, OR HER FATHER WILL NEVER SEE ISABELLA AGAIN.

Luca's face turned frighteningly still.

He called the mansion.

No answer.

He tried the housekeeper.

Nothing.

Then he called the security desk.

A stranger picked up.

“Mr. Moretti,” the man said calmly, “your daughter is safe for the moment.”

Luca's blood ran cold.

“Who is this?”

“Someone who knows you have a weakness.”

“Touch her and I'll—”

“Your threats are irrelevant. Vanessa Sterling wants the original ledger, the medical records, and every photograph connected to Isabella's disappearance.”

“And if I refuse?”

The man paused.

“Then you'll receive your daughter's shoes in a box tomorrow morning.”

The call ended.

Luca turned to Marcus.

“Get every available man to the mansion.”

But Maya grabbed his sleeve.

“Wait.”

She looked at the photograph of Sophie on the phone.

“Vanessa doesn't want the evidence.”

Luca stared at her.

“What?”

“She wants Sophie.”

Maya's voice broke.

“Because Sophie is the only person who can identify the woman who took me from the hospital.”

Luca felt the ground shift beneath him.

“Isabella?”

May you like

Maya shook her head.

“No. The woman who carried me out of that hospital was wearing Isabella's face.”
