Chapter 8

### The Night the Truth Finally Came Home

Luca wanted to storm the ferry terminal with every man he had.

Marcus convinced him that doing so would put Sophie directly in the line of fire.

“We need to know who has her,” Marcus said. “If we rush in blind, they'll use her against us.”

Luca stared at the silent radio.

“She's six years old.”

“I know.”

“No, you don't. Every minute she's out there—”

“I know what happens when a man lets fear make his decisions,” Marcus interrupted. “Gabriel taught me that.”

Luca turned.

“What did you say?”

Marcus looked down.

“Your brother saved my life during the warehouse fire. I was there.”

The room went still.

“You told me you arrived after the fire started.”

“I lied.”

Luca stepped closer.

“Why?”

“Because Gabriel made me promise to protect Isabella and the children if he couldn't.”

“The children?”

Marcus's face tightened.

“Maya and Sophie.”

Luca stared at him.

“You knew about Maya?”

“I knew there was another child. I didn't know where she was. Gabriel told me the adoption records were the key to bringing down Vanessa's network.”

“And you let me spend three years believing my wife was dead.”

“I was following Gabriel's orders. He said that if you knew the truth before we had enough evidence, Vanessa would kill Isabella.”

Luca's voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.

“You should have trusted me.”

Marcus didn't defend himself.

“You're right.”

For a moment, the two men stood in silence.

Then Marcus handed Luca a small flash drive.

“Gabriel left this with me before the fire. I never opened it. He said it was meant for you when the time was right.”

Luca connected it to the security computer.

A video appeared.

Gabriel sat in a dim room, his face bruised, his voice strained.

“Luca, if you're watching this, I'm sorry. I should have told you everything. Father built the foundation to hide money, but Vanessa turned it into something worse. She used it to control families who couldn't afford to fight back.”

He paused, struggling to breathe.

“Isabella found the records. She discovered that Vanessa had taken her own daughter and arranged a false death certificate. When Isabella threatened to expose her, Vanessa attacked her.”

Luca's fists clenched.

“Gabriel continued, “I helped Isabella escape. I arranged the fire to make Vanessa believe I was dead. But someone inside our security team betrayed us. I couldn't tell you who without risking everything.”

He leaned toward the camera.

“There's one more thing. Vanessa didn't choose you because she loved you. She chose you because your father left a sealed trust that can only be transferred to a spouse recognized by the family court. The trust contains the original ownership records of the medical foundation.”

The video ended.

Luca looked at Marcus.

“Where is the trust?”

“In the bank's private vault.”

“Can Vanessa access it?”

“Not without the marriage certificate and your signature.”

Luca understood.

The engagement was never about love.

It was about control.

He looked at Emma.

“She'll use Sophie to force me into marrying her.”

Emma shook her head.

“Then don't let her decide what happens next.”

Luca looked at her, and for the first time, he saw not just a brave employee but a woman who had been standing between his daughter and danger while he was busy trying to understand his own past.

“Why are you risking your life for us?”

Emma hesitated.

“Because I remember Isabella.”

Luca frowned.

“You said you'd never met her.”

“I thought I hadn't.”

Emma reached into her pocket and pulled out an old photograph she had carried since childhood.

It showed a younger Emma standing beside a woman in a hospital corridor.

The woman wore a white coat.

On the back was a date from six years earlier and a handwritten note.

For Emma, who helped me when nobody else would.

Luca stared at the photograph.

“Where did you get this?”

“My mother kept it. She worked as a nurse at Saint Agnes. She died when I was seventeen, but she told me that the woman in this photograph had helped save my life when I was a baby.”

Emma looked at the image.

“I never knew her name.”

Luca turned the photograph over.

A signature appeared beneath the note.

Isabella Moretti.

Emma's voice trembled.

“My mother said I was born prematurely and spent weeks in intensive care. She always told me someone had paid my medical bills anonymously.”

Luca understood why Isabella had known Emma's name.

Isabella had helped her family long before Emma entered the mansion.

But the discovery only raised more questions.

Why had Isabella left the photograph where Emma would find it?

And how had she known Emma would become Sophie's protector?

A message arrived on Marcus's phone.

The ferry terminal's security cameras had come online.

The screen showed Vanessa standing beside a frightened Sophie.

Celeste Vane stood behind them, wearing Isabella's face.

And at the far end of the room, a man stepped into the light.

He had a scar running from his temple to his jaw.

Gabriel Moretti.

Alive.

Luca stared at the screen.

Then Gabriel looked directly into the camera.

May you like

He raised a gun toward Celeste.

And fired.
