Chapter 5

### The Child Isabella Never Told Him About

Luca stared at the photograph until the room seemed to tilt around him.

Isabella had given birth to Sophie six years earlier. He remembered the delivery room, the hours of fear, the tiny cry that changed his life.

There had been no other child.

No second pregnancy.

No missing baby.

Yet the woman in the photograph was unmistakably Isabella, and the infant in her arms was unmistakably real.

“Get me the original hospital records,” Luca ordered.

Marcus took the photograph.

“Saint Agnes?”

“Every hospital she visited. Every clinic. Every doctor who treated her. I want a timeline of her medical history from the year before Sophie was born.”

Emma stood near the doorway, unable to hide her concern.

“What if the photograph is meant to mislead you?”

“Then we'll prove it.”

“And if it isn't?”

Luca looked at her.

“Then someone took a child from my wife, and I intend to find out who.”

Sophie had been listening from the hallway.

She stepped into the room.

“Daddy, did Mommy have another baby?”

Luca knelt before her.

“I don't know, sweetheart.”

“Would she have told me?”

He swallowed.

“If she could have.”

Sophie considered that answer with the seriousness only a frightened child could possess.

“Then we should find her.”

Luca held her close.

“Yes. We should.”

The investigation uncovered a disturbing pattern.

Six months before Sophie was born, Isabella had been treated at Saint Agnes under a different surname. The record described a difficult delivery followed by an emergency transfer to a private neonatal unit.

The infant's name was listed as Baby Girl A.

There was no father recorded.

No discharge photograph.

No trace of the child's destination.

But one signature appeared on every transfer form.

Vanessa Sterling.

Luca read the documents in silence.

“Why was she involved in Isabella's medical care?”

Marcus answered carefully.

“Vanessa was working for a private patient-advocacy organization at the time. Her family funded the neonatal unit.”

“An organization that transferred newborns without their mothers?”

“We're still investigating.”

Luca slammed the file shut.

“Then investigate faster.”

Meanwhile, Emma had begun to recognize the fear beneath Vanessa's anger.

Vanessa wasn't merely protecting her engagement.

She was protecting something that could destroy her.

Late that night, Emma returned to the nursery and searched the hidden compartment again. Behind the photograph lay a small strip of fabric embroidered with a name.

MAYA.

She turned it over.

On the back, in Isabella's handwriting, were the words:

She deserves to know who she is.

Emma took the fabric to Luca.

He stared at the name.

“Maya?”

“Could it be the baby's name?”

“Possibly.”

He picked up his phone and called an old family physician, Dr. Elaine Porter.

The doctor answered on the fourth ring.

“Luca? It's late.”

“I need you to tell me everything you know about Isabella's pregnancy before Sophie.”

A long silence followed.

Then Dr. Porter said, “I was told never to discuss that pregnancy.”

“By whom?”

“Your father.”

Luca felt the room grow cold.

“My father died eleven years ago.”

“I know.”

“Then explain.”

Dr. Porter exhaled shakily.

“Isabella came to me shortly after you married. She was terrified. She believed someone was following her. She told me she'd discovered that your family had been financing an illegal adoption network through several private clinics.”

Luca gripped the phone.

“My family?”

“Your father had invested in the medical foundation. I don't know how much he knew about its activities. Isabella discovered records showing that vulnerable mothers had been pressured into signing away their newborns.”

“And the baby?”

“She believed one of those children was connected to your family.”

“Why didn't she tell me?”

“Because she thought you might be involved without knowing it. She wanted proof before she put you in danger.”

Luca closed his eyes.

For years, he had remembered Isabella as a woman who suddenly became distant, who asked strange questions about his family's businesses, who sometimes locked herself in the study with documents.

He had accused her of mistrusting him.

He had never asked what she was afraid of.

“Where is the baby now?” he demanded.

“I don't know. But Isabella left me a letter shortly before she disappeared. She instructed me to give it to you only if someone named Maya contacted me.”

“Do you still have it?”

“Yes.”

“Bring it to me.”

“Luca, there's something you should understand. Isabella wasn't only afraid for herself. She was afraid of what would happen if the child learned the truth.”

The line went dead.

Luca stared at his phone.

Then Emma's phone rang.

An unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

A woman's voice whispered, “You found the fabric.”

Emma froze.

“Who is this?”

“Don't let Luca trust the doctor. She was paid to keep the baby hidden.”

“Where is Isabella?”

“Alive.”

Emma's heart hammered.

“Tell me where she is.”

“Tomorrow. The abandoned train station on Mercer Street. Come alone.”

“Why should I trust you?”

The woman gave a bitter laugh.

“Because Vanessa Sterling has spent six years searching for a little girl who should never have survived.”

The call ended.

Emma immediately told Luca.

He ordered Marcus to trace the number, but it had been routed through a disposable phone.

“I'm going to the station,” Emma said.

“No,” Luca replied.

“She contacted me because she trusts me.”

“She contacted you because she knows you're close to Sophie.”

“Then let me be the reason she speaks.”

Luca looked at her for a long moment.

“I'm not sending you alone.”

The following afternoon, they approached the abandoned station in two vehicles. Marcus and his men took positions around the building while Luca and Emma entered through a broken side door.

Dust covered the old benches.

A single light flickered above the platform.

Then a woman stepped from behind a pillar.

She was in her thirties, with dark hair pulled into a tight knot and a small scar along her jaw.

She looked at Emma.

Then at Luca.

“I know where Isabella is,” she said.

Luca stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

The woman swallowed.

“My name is Maya.”

She held up a photograph.

It showed the same baby Isabella had held in the hospital bed.

Then Maya spoke the words that shattered Luca's world.

“I'm Isabella's daughter.”

May you like

She paused.

“And Vanessa Sterling is my biological mother.”
