The Dance Evelyn Left Behind / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - The Wedding Evelyn WantedA year later, Nathaniel proposed.

He didn't take me to a luxury restaurant.

He didn't rent a private island.

He didn't hire a photographer.

He simply took me into the ballroom.

The children were waiting.

Sophia held a small velvet box.

Eli carried flowers.

Nathaniel knelt.

"Clara Delgado."

I covered my mouth.

"I know our story isn't normal."

I laughed through tears.

"That's an understatement."

He smiled.

"You came into my life because your daughter broke into a forbidden room."

"Technically, she rescued you."

"That's true."

He opened the box.

Inside was a simple ring.

"Will you marry me?"

I looked at Sophia.

She nodded furiously.

"Say yes, Mommy."

I laughed.

"Yes."

Nathaniel stood.

Sophia screamed.

Eli threw the flowers into the air.

And Mr. Harris, watching from the doorway, pretended to wipe dust from his eye.

The wedding took place in the ballroom.

Not because it was grand.

Because it had once been the loneliest room in the house.

Now it would become the happiest.

Elena sat beside Daniel.

Victoria attended quietly.

She and Nathaniel had reached a peaceful understanding.

Nobody pretended the past hadn't happened.

They simply refused to let it own them.

Before the ceremony, Nathaniel found me alone.

"You look beautiful."

"So do you."

He smiled.

"I wish Evelyn could see this."

I took his hand.

"Maybe she can."

He looked toward the ceiling.

Then smiled.

When I walked down the aisle, Sophia was beside me.

She was my flower girl.

Eli carried the rings.

Nathaniel waited at the end.

His eyes filled with tears.

The music began.

The same melody Evelyn had danced to.

But this time it wasn't a warning.

It was a blessing.

We exchanged vows.

Nathaniel promised to love me.

I promised to love him.

And together, we promised to protect the children.

After the ceremony, Sophia asked for one last dance.

Everyone gathered around.

Nathaniel danced with me.

Daniel danced with Elena.

Sophia danced with Eli.

And for one beautiful moment, the past and present seemed to exist together.

Then Sophia stopped.

She looked toward the piano.

"Mommy."

"What?"

"Look."

A small white feather rested on the piano.

I smiled.

"Probably from one of the decorations."

Sophia shook her head.

"No."

"What is it?"

She smiled.

"Mommy Evelyn said thank you."

Nathaniel heard her.

He closed his eyes.

May you like

And whispered:

"Thank you, Evie."
