The Dance Evelyn Left Behind / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Came BackSix months passed.

Arthur was arrested.

Victoria cooperated with investigators after learning that Arthur intended to blame everything on her.

Elena recovered.

Daniel moved into a guesthouse near the estate.

The Reed company survived, although Nathaniel sold several divisions connected to his father's old network.

Nathaniel changed too.

He laughed more.

He spent mornings with Eli.

He stopped missing bedtime.

And he began taking Sophia seriously whenever she told him something strange.

One evening, she said:

"Daddy, the flower lady isn't bad anymore."

Nathaniel looked at me.

"Victoria?"

Sophia nodded.

"She cried."

We later learned Victoria had visited Elena.

She had apologized.

She admitted she had been manipulated by Arthur.

She hadn't known he planned to kill Evelyn.

It didn't erase her choices.

But Nathaniel chose not to destroy her.

He believed justice and revenge were different things.

Then, on a rainy April morning, everything changed again.

A package arrived.

No return address.

Inside was a small cassette.

Nathaniel stared at it.

"Another recording."

He played it.

Evelyn appeared.

But this recording was different.

She was smiling.

Healthy.

Happy.

And holding a baby.

Eli.

Then she turned toward someone beside the camera.

The camera moved.

A little girl appeared.

Sophia.

I stopped breathing.

Nathaniel looked at me.

"That's impossible."

Sophia had been only one year old.

She couldn't have been there.

Then Evelyn spoke.

"I know you're confused."

She smiled.

"But Clara, if you're watching this, then you probably think Sophia found this recording by accident."

I felt chills.

"She didn't."

Nathaniel stared at the screen.

Evelyn continued.

"Children notice patterns adults don't."

She looked toward Sophia.

"That little girl is going to help you."

Nathaniel whispered:

"She knew."

Evelyn smiled.

"Not everything needs to be solved by adults."

The recording ended.

I looked at my daughter.

"Sophia?"

She shrugged.

"Mommy?"

"What?"

"Did you know about this?"

She shook her head.

"I only knew the lady wanted Daddy to be happy."

Nathaniel crouched beside her.

"Why?"

Sophia touched his face.

"Because he was lonely."

Nathaniel laughed through tears.

Then he hugged her.

I watched them.

Something inside me softened.

Nathaniel had once been a billionaire who owned half the city.

But now, sitting on the ballroom floor with two children in his arms, he looked richer than he ever had before.

That night, he asked me to stay.

Not as an employee.

As family.

I didn't know what to say.

"I don't want you to feel obligated."

"I don't."

"I don't want Sophia to become part of some strange replacement family."

"Neither do I."

He looked at me.

"I don't want to replace Evelyn."

I nodded.

"I know."

"I want to build something new."

He paused.

"With you."

My heart raced.

"Nathaniel..."

"You don't have to answer tonight."

I smiled.

"I already know the answer."

His eyes softened.

May you like

"What is it?"

"I want to stay."
