The Dance Evelyn Left Behind / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - A New BeginningOur lives became something neither of us had expected.

Nathaniel and I didn't rush.

We learned how to live together slowly.

Sophia loved having breakfast with Eli.

Eli followed her everywhere.

They were more like siblings than children who had once barely known each other.

Elena became a regular visitor.

Daniel taught Sophia how to play chess.

Mr. Harris complained that the children were destroying the house.

Everyone knew he secretly loved it.

One Saturday morning, Nathaniel found Sophia drawing at the dining table.

"What are you drawing?"

"Our family."

He smiled.

"Can I see?"

She showed him.

There were six people.

Sophia.

Me.

Eli.

Nathaniel.

Elena.

Daniel.

Nathaniel pointed at one figure.

"Who's that?"

Sophia smiled.

"Mommy Evelyn."

She had drawn Evelyn in the corner.

Nathaniel stared at the picture.

Then he kissed his daughter's forehead.

"That's beautiful."

"I don't want to forget her."

"You won't."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

That afternoon, we returned to the ballroom.

Nathaniel had restored it.

Not as a memorial.

As a place for living.

He installed new speakers.

The old piano was tuned.

The curtains were replaced.

But he kept the original media player.

The room where Evelyn had left her message was now filled with sunlight.

Sophia asked:

"Can we dance?"

Nathaniel laughed.

"Again?"

"Again."

Music filled the room.

Eli stumbled.

Sophia caught him.

"Feet first."

Everyone laughed.

Then Nathaniel approached me.

"May I?"

I took his hand.

We danced.

No secrets.

No fear.

No locked doors.

Afterward, Nathaniel walked to the piano.

He found a small envelope taped beneath it.

His expression changed.

"Another letter?"

He opened it.

It was short.

Nathaniel,

If you've reached this point, then you're finally living instead of surviving.

Don't spend your life looking backward.

Take care of the children.

Take care of yourself.

And if Clara is still beside you...

He stopped.

His eyes filled with tears.

I whispered:

"What does it say?"

He handed it to me.

...don't be afraid to love again.

I looked at him.

Neither of us spoke.

Then Sophia shouted from across the room.

"Daddy!"

Nathaniel turned.

"Yes?"

"Mommy says we're having cake!"

I laughed.

Nathaniel smiled.

"Your mother says many dangerous things."

Sophia giggled.

For the first time, the ballroom echoed with laughter.

Not ghosts.

May you like

Not secrets.

Laughter.
