The Dance Evelyn Left Behind / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Child in the PhotographNathaniel spent the entire night examining the documents.

I stayed downstairs because Sophia refused to sleep without me.

At three in the morning, Nathaniel found me in the kitchen.

He looked different.

Not like the billionaire I had worked for.

Not like the cold businessman who could silence an entire boardroom with one glance.

He looked like a father who had just discovered that everything he believed about his family might be a lie.

"I need your help."

I stood.

"What happened?"

He placed a folder on the table.

"I found the original birth records."

"Eli's?"

He nodded.

"His hospital record was altered."

"By whom?"

"I don't know."

"Then how do you know?"

"Because I found the original."

He showed me both documents.

The official record listed Nathaniel Reed as the father.

The original had another name.

Daniel Reed.

I stared at it.

"Your brother?"

"Apparently."

"But you said he was dead."

"I was wrong."

Nathaniel sat down.

"Daniel is alive."

The room felt suddenly cold.

"Why would Evelyn hide that?"

"Maybe she didn't."

"What do you mean?"

"Maybe Daniel isn't the person she was protecting us from."

He opened the blue box again.

The flash drive contained one video.

Evelyn appeared on the screen.

She looked tired.

Her voice was quiet.

"Nathaniel, if you're watching this, I failed to tell you the truth in person."

She paused.

"I found Daniel."

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

"He is alive."

Evelyn continued.

"And he isn't your enemy."

Nathaniel opened his eyes.

Evelyn looked directly into the camera.

"Your father tried to erase him from the family because Daniel discovered something."

She leaned closer.

"Your father's company wasn't what you believed."

A document appeared on screen.

Bank transfers.

Company names.

Dates.

Millions of dollars.

"Your father built a private network that moved money through charities, political organizations, and private security companies."

Nathaniel whispered:

"No."

Evelyn continued.

"Daniel found it."

She looked frightened.

"Then he disappeared."

The video ended.

Nathaniel sat in silence.

"What happened to him?"

"I don't know."

"But he's alive."

"Yes."

A message suddenly appeared on Nathaniel's laptop.

STOP SEARCHING.

Then another.

SOME TRUTHS SHOULD STAY BURIED.

Nathaniel immediately called security.

I moved closer to Sophia.

"Can they hurt us?"

Nathaniel looked at me.

"Not while I'm alive."

There was something terrifyingly sincere about the way he said it.

Later that morning, we discovered another clue.

The silver bracelet from the blue box had a hidden compartment.

Inside was a tiny piece of paper.

Three words.

Room 217.

Nathaniel looked at Mr. Harris.

"Is there a room 217?"

Mr. Harris hesitated.

"At the old hospital."

"Which hospital?"

"The one where Eli was born."

We drove there that afternoon.

The hospital had been renovated.

The maternity wing had been closed.

But the old records basement remained.

Nathaniel used his family's legal influence to obtain access.

Room 217 was not a patient room.

It was an administrative archive.

Inside, we found a box labeled with Evelyn's name.

Nathaniel opened it.

There was a photograph.

Evelyn holding Eli.

And beside her stood Daniel.

Alive.

Healthy.

Smiling.

Nathaniel stared at his brother.

Then he found a handwritten note.

Daniel isn't Eli's father.

Nathaniel exhaled.

The next line made his face collapse.

Daniel is Eli's protector.

Then we heard footsteps.

Someone was coming.

Nathaniel shut the box.

The basement door opened.

A nurse stood there.

She looked at Nathaniel.

"Mr. Reed?"

"Yes."

"I knew your wife."

Nathaniel stepped forward.

"How?"

The nurse's eyes filled with tears.

"She came here the night before Eli was born."

"Why?"

"She was afraid."

"Of whom?"

The nurse looked toward the hallway.

Then whispered:

"Your father's former attorney."

Nathaniel's jaw tightened.

"Name."

The nurse shook her head.

"He's dead."

"Name."

"Arthur Vale."

Nathaniel went still.

Arthur Vale had been Nathaniel's godfather.

The man who had managed the Reed family estate for decades.

The man Nathaniel trusted more than almost anyone.

The nurse handed him a photograph.

"Evelyn told me to give you this if you ever came looking."

It showed Arthur standing beside the hospital nursery.

Behind him was a woman.

A woman who looked almost exactly like Evelyn.

Nathaniel stared.

"Who is she?"

The nurse whispered:

"Her name was Elena."

Then Sophia, who had been holding my hand, suddenly spoke.

"Mommy."

I looked down.

She was staring at the photograph.

"That's the lady."

Nathaniel crouched.

"What lady?"

May you like

Sophia pointed.

"The one from the ballroom."
