Chapter 7 - THE TRAP

Victor Lang was not hiding.
He was waiting.
Ryan explained that Victor maintained a private property outside Albany through a corporation registered overseas.
Years earlier, Ryan had installed the property’s security system.
The FBI prepared a raid.
But Victor abandoned the house hours before agents arrived.
Inside, they found burned documents.
Weapons.
Fake passports.
And photographs.
Daniel.
Sarah.
Emma.
Ryan.
One photograph was recent.
Daniel in rehabilitation.
Taken through a window.
Victor was still watching.
Daniel’s security doubled.
Sarah wanted Emma removed from the hospital entirely.
Emma disagreed.
“No.”
“Sweetheart—”
“Danny needs me.”
“Danny has doctors.”
“He likes me better.”
Daniel, sitting in his wheelchair, gave Sarah the faintest smile.
She pointed at him.
“Do not encourage her.”
His speech had improved.
“Wouldn’t dream of it.”
Emma climbed onto his lap.
Daniel winced slightly but wrapped his stronger arm around her.
Physical therapy was brutal.
Some mornings he could barely lift his hand.
Other days he walked six steps with parallel bars.
His frustration could fill a room.
Emma became his unofficial coach.
“One more.”
“I did one more.”
“Again.”
Daniel glared at her.
“You’re very demanding.”
Emma nodded proudly.
Sarah laughed.
Those moments became the strange center of their lives.
Outside, lawyers fought over companies.
Federal agents hunted Victor.
Reporters camped outside.
Inside rehabilitation room 4B, a billionaire learned how to button a shirt while a three-year-old applauded.
One evening Daniel found Sarah asleep in a chair beside him.
He touched her hand.
She woke.
“Sorry.”
“For what?”
“Falling asleep.”
“You’ve spent a month keeping me alive.”
“The machines did most of it.”
“Emma disagrees.”
Sarah smiled.
Daniel became serious.
“I remember her.”
“From before?”
“From inside.”
Sarah stopped.
Daniel looked toward the ceiling.
“Voices were… far away. Like underwater.”
Her eyes filled.
“I heard Emma.”
Sarah took his hand.
“What did she say?”
“Pancakes.”
She laughed.
Daniel did too.
Then his eyes met hers.
“And you.”
“What did I say?”
“You told me I wasn’t allowed to die because you still had my dry cleaning.”
Sarah covered her face.
“Oh God.”
“It was motivating.”
Their laughter faded.
Daniel’s thumb moved across her knuckles.
Something changed between them.
Quiet.
Warm.
Dangerous in an entirely different way.
Then Sarah’s phone rang.
Ryan.
She answered.
His voice was urgent.
“Take Emma and leave.”
Sarah stood.
“What happened?”
“Victor contacted me.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What does he want?”
“The drive.”
“He knows the FBI has it.”
“No. He thinks I kept the original encryption key.”
“Do you?”
Ryan was silent.
Sarah understood.
“Yes.”
Ryan explained that the evidence authorities possessed was enough for serious charges, but his master encryption key could unlock records connecting Victor directly to two deaths and Daniel’s crash.
Victor wanted it destroyed.
The FBI proposed using Ryan as bait.
Sarah hated the idea.
Ryan accepted immediately.
“I already lost three years with Emma,” he said. “I’m not spending the rest of her childhood running.”
The exchange was arranged at an abandoned freight warehouse.
Victor arrived.
So did federal agents.
But Victor had anticipated them.
The man who stepped into the warehouse was not Victor.
It was a hired courier.
Meanwhile, Victor entered Daniel’s rehabilitation center wearing stolen hospital credentials.
Sarah saw him first.
He was walking toward Emma.
She screamed.
Daniel turned his wheelchair.
Victor grabbed Emma.
The child cried out.
Something happened inside Daniel.
Before the accident, he had been six-foot-two and athletic.
Now standing without assistance was still difficult.
But he stood.
No bars.
No therapist.
No hesitation.
“Put her down.”
Victor froze.
Daniel took one unsteady step.
Then another.
Victor pulled Emma closer.
“You should have died.”
Daniel’s face became still.
“You first.”
Sarah slammed the emergency alarm.
Victor ran.
Daniel lunged.
Both men fell.
Security flooded the corridor.
Emma crawled toward Sarah.
Victor was pinned to the floor.
Daniel lay beside him, breathing hard.
Sarah rushed over.
“Daniel!”
He looked at Emma.
“Okay?”
Emma nodded through tears.
Then she crawled into his arms.
Daniel held her.
Victor laughed from the floor.
“You think this is over?”
Federal agents dragged him upright.
Victor looked directly at Sarah.
“Ask Daniel what happened to Marcus.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Sarah saw it.
Guilt.
Victor smiled.
“Go ahead.”

Then he delivered the sentence that shattered Daniel’s recovery.
“Ask your hero why that driver died instead of him.”
