Chapter 1 - WAKE UP, DANNY

The doctors said Daniel Cole showed no meaningful signs of awareness.

But the three-year-old girl beside his hospital bed refused to believe them.

Emma climbed carefully onto the mattress, curled against the billionaire’s motionless arm, and wrapped her tiny fingers around his hand.

“Wake up, Danny.”

Nothing.

Machines breathed for him. Monitors turned his life into numbers and lines. His brother was already meeting lawyers, discussing the company, the voting shares, and what authority would transfer if Daniel never came back.

Sarah stood in the corner listening.

She was only Daniel’s housekeeper.

She wasn’t family.

She had no legal right to make decisions for him.

But she couldn’t leave.

Neither could Emma.

“He doesn’t like being alone,” the little girl whispered whenever Sarah tried taking her home.

“How do you know?”

Emma looked at her mother as if the answer were obvious.

“Because I love him.”

On the third night, Emma climbed beside Daniel again.

A young ICU nurse entered while the child rested her cheek against his chest.

“I love you, Danny.”

The heart monitor changed.

The nurse stopped.

It was small. Barely noticeable. A brief acceleration before the rhythm settled again.

Emma started talking about her stuffed rabbit.

The monitor shifted again.

She squeezed Daniel’s hand.

Another change.

The nurse stared at the screen.

A doctor was called over.

“It could be reflexive,” he murmured.

The nurse nodded slowly.

“Probably.”

But she kept watching.

And two nights later, Daniel’s brother walked into the hospital carrying paperwork that could end everything.

The folder landed on the nurse’s station. The nurse recognized immediately what was inside: authorization concerning withdrawal of life support.

Before Daniel’s brother could move forward, she stepped toward him.

“Mr. Cole… there’s something I think you need to see.”
