Chapter 4 - BOX 317

Sarah called the police before opening the door.

Nathan left before they arrived.

That frightened her more than if he had stayed.

He knew exactly how far he could push.

The next morning, Sarah left Emma with Olivia’s mother and traveled to Manhattan with Detective Aaron Brooks.

The brass key opened Box 317.

Inside were no diamonds.

No cash.

No secret will.

There was a flash drive, a handwritten ledger, two sealed envelopes, and a photograph of Daniel and Nathan as boys.

Sarah picked up the photograph.

On the back Daniel had written:

I spent my life protecting him. I should have protected the company from him.

Detective Brooks plugged the encrypted drive into a secured police laptop.

Most files required passwords.

One did not.

A video.

Daniel appeared on-screen.

Healthy.

Alive.

Angry.

Sarah covered her mouth.

“If you are watching this,” Daniel said, “something happened before I could finish what I started.”

He leaned closer to the camera.

“For eighteen months, I have been investigating unauthorized transfers from Cole Meridian subsidiaries. Approximately forty-three million dollars has disappeared.”

Brooks exchanged a look with Sarah.

Daniel continued.

“The transfers appear connected to my brother.”

Sarah’s stomach tightened.

“But Nathan may not be acting alone.”

Daniel explained that someone inside the company had manipulated vendor accounts and transportation contracts. He had secretly hired a forensic accountant.

That accountant disappeared three days before Daniel’s crash.

Then Daniel said something worse.

“My vehicle’s maintenance records were altered last month. If I’m injured in an accident, assume it may not be one.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

The video ended with instructions.

One envelope was for federal investigators.

The second had Sarah’s name.

She opened it.

Sarah,

You once told me rich people make the mistake of thinking money can replace people. You were right.

Her vision blurred.

If Emma is with you, tell her I still owe her blueberry pancakes.

Sarah laughed through a sudden sob.

Then she continued.

There is one more thing you need to know. Nathan believes he inherits my voting authority if I become permanently incapacitated. He doesn’t.

Sarah stopped.

Brooks leaned closer.

The controlling proxy transfers to an independent trust. The trust becomes active only after my legal counsel receives the contents of this box.

Sarah looked up.

“Then Nathan gains nothing if Daniel dies?”

“Maybe,” Brooks said.

“Does Nathan know?”

“That’s the interesting question.”

The answer came before sunset.

Someone broke into Sarah’s apartment.

Nothing valuable was taken.

Television untouched.

Laptop untouched.

Jewelry untouched.

Only Emma’s stuffed rabbit was missing.

Nathan knew.

Or somebody working with him did.

At the hospital, Daniel’s condition had changed again.

His eyes had opened.

Not fully.

Not purposefully, according to Dr. Reeves.

But they had opened.

Emma stood on a chair beside him.

“Danny?”

His eyelids fluttered.

Sarah entered and stopped.

Emma touched his cheek.

“Mommy came.”

Daniel’s heart rate increased.

Sarah approached slowly.

“Daniel?”

His fingers moved.

Everyone froze.

“Daniel, if you can hear me, squeeze my hand.”

Nothing.

Nathan entered behind them.

Daniel’s monitor accelerated violently.

Olivia looked at Sarah.

Sarah looked at Nathan.

Nathan went pale.

Dr. Reeves immediately ordered everyone back.

Nathan tried to approach.

Daniel’s blood pressure climbed.

“Out,” Dr. Reeves said.

“What?”

“Leave the room.”

“He’s my brother.”

“And right now your presence appears to be causing physiological stress.”

Nathan stared at Daniel.

For the first time, Sarah saw something unmistakable in his face.

Daniel frightened him.

That night, Brooks called.

They had partially decrypted the flash drive.

“There’s another name,” he said.

“Who?”

“Victor Lang.”

Sarah knew it immediately.

Cole Meridian’s chief financial officer.

Daniel’s closest friend for seventeen years.

Brooks continued.

“We found communications between Lang and Nathan.”

Sarah sat down.

“How bad?”

“Bad enough that federal investigators are coming.”

She looked through the ICU glass.

Daniel lay motionless.

Olivia adjusted his IV.

Emma colored a picture beside him.

Then Sarah noticed something.

Daniel’s right hand.

His index finger moved.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Sarah rushed inside.

“Daniel?”

His finger moved again.

She remembered something from years earlier.

Daniel tapping his desk impatiently while she vacuumed.

One tap meant yes.

Two meant no.

Three meant get me coffee.

Sarah almost laughed.

Instead, she whispered:

“Can you hear me?”

One tap.

Sarah stopped breathing.

“Daniel?”

One tap.

She turned toward Olivia.

“Get Dr. Reeves.”

Then Daniel’s finger moved repeatedly.

Fast.

Urgent.

Sarah leaned closer.

“What?”

His eyes shifted.

Toward the door.

May you like

Victor Lang had just entered the ICU.

Daniel’s monitor screamed.
