Chapter 6 - THE SECRET SARAH NEVER TOLD HIM

Sarah stepped away from the bed.
“No.”
Daniel looked confused.
“You know?”
She shook her head too quickly.
Emma’s father had been a subject Sarah avoided for three years.
Daniel knew only the version she told everyone.
Emma’s father had left before she was born.
That was technically true.
It was also nowhere near the whole truth.
His name was Ryan Bennett.
He had not abandoned Sarah because he didn’t want a child.
He disappeared because he was terrified.
Ryan had worked in cybersecurity.
And for six months before Emma’s birth, one of his consulting clients had been Cole Meridian.
Sarah sat beside Daniel.
“How do you know Ryan?”
Daniel closed his eyes, exhausted by the effort of speaking.
“Found… me.”
“When?”
“Before crash.”
Daniel explained in fragments.
Ryan had contacted him under an alias.
He claimed someone inside Cole Meridian was laundering money through transportation subsidiaries.
Daniel initially assumed he was attempting extortion.
Then Ryan sent proof.
Victor learned someone was leaking information.
Ryan disappeared.
Sarah’s throat tightened.
“Where is he?”
Daniel looked at her.
“I don’t know.”
She stood.
For three years, Sarah had believed Ryan had chosen fear over his family.
Now another possibility tore through her.
Maybe he had left to protect them.
Brooks investigated.
Two days later, he found something.
Ryan Bennett had been living under another name in Vermont.
Until eight months ago.
Then he disappeared again.
His rented cabin had been abandoned overnight.
Inside, police found photographs of Sarah and Emma.
Hundreds.
School pickup.
Grocery store.
The playground.
Sarah initially felt violated.
Then Brooks showed her the dates.
Ryan had never photographed them directly.
He had collected surveillance images taken by someone else.
Someone had been watching Sarah for years.
Ryan had been documenting it.
One photograph showed Victor Lang sitting inside a black sedan across from Emma’s daycare.
Sarah nearly collapsed.
“Why?”
Brooks pointed to handwriting on the back.
They think she has it.
The second drive.
Ryan must have hidden evidence somewhere connected to Emma.
But where?
Sarah returned to Daniel’s Connecticut estate for the first time since the accident.
Emma ran through the kitchen.
Everything looked frozen in time.
Daniel’s coffee mug remained in the cabinet.
His coat hung by the mudroom.
Sarah entered Emma’s little playroom.
Daniel had created it two years earlier after complaining that stepping on toy blocks was “an unacceptable occupational hazard.”
She searched everything.
Books.
Dolls.
Puzzle boxes.
Nothing.
Then Emma pulled a wooden music box from a shelf.
“Daddy box.”
Sarah froze.
“What did you call that?”
Emma shrugged.
“Daddy box.”
Sarah had never heard her say it before.
“Who gave you this?”
“A man.”
“When?”
“Long time.”
Children had strange relationships with time.
Sarah knelt.
“What man?”
Emma touched Sarah’s cheek.
“He had your eyes.”
Sarah began crying before she understood she was crying.
Ryan.
The music box had been delivered anonymously on Emma’s second birthday.
Sarah had assumed it came from Daniel.
She opened the bottom compartment.
Nothing.
Brooks examined it later.
Under the felt lining, he found a microSD card.
The second drive.
It contained evidence far beyond financial crimes.
Victor had bribed inspectors.
Manipulated public contracts.
Threatened employees.
And there was evidence connecting him to the sabotage of Daniel’s vehicle.
But the final folder was encrypted.
Its title consisted of two words:
SARAH BENNETT.
They cracked it at 2:00 a.m.
Inside was a video.
Ryan appeared on-screen.
Sarah covered her mouth.
He looked older.
Thin.
Terrified.
“Sarah, if you ever see this, I need you to know I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you.”
She broke.
Brooks quietly left the room.
Ryan explained everything.
Victor discovered his investigation before Emma was born.
He threatened Sarah.
Threatened their unborn child.
Ryan disappeared deliberately, hoping Victor would believe he had taken the evidence with him.
Instead, Victor kept watching Sarah.
“I stayed away because every time I tried getting close, his people followed.”
Ryan looked into the camera.
“I’m sorry Emma grew up thinking I didn’t want her.”
Sarah sobbed.
“I wanted every second.”
Then Ryan said something unexpected.
“Daniel Cole found me.”
Sarah looked up.
“He offered to help.”
Daniel had arranged new documents and a safe location.
He planned to expose Victor after gathering enough evidence.
Ryan ended the recording with an address.
Not Vermont.
Maine.
Sarah drove there with Brooks the following morning.
The address led to a weather-beaten cottage overlooking the Atlantic.
Sarah walked to the door alone.
She knocked.
Nothing.
Again.
Then the door opened.
A bearded man stood there.
He stared at her.
Sarah stared back.
Three years disappeared.
“Ryan?”
His eyes filled.
“Sarah.”
She slapped him.
Hard.
Then she grabbed his shirt and hugged him.
Ryan broke down in her arms.
Behind them, Brooks quietly looked away.
Sarah eventually pulled back.
“You have a daughter who thinks her father didn’t want her.”
“I know.”
“You’re going to explain that.”
“I will.”
“And then you’re going to help put Victor Lang in prison.”
Ryan nodded.
“I can do better than that.”
May you like
He looked toward Brooks.
“I know where Victor is.”
