BENEATH THE TABLE / Chapter 9 / 20

Chapter 9 - The Man Behind the Curtain

Richard Cole wasn't dead.

He was living under another name in a small coastal town.

When we found him, he didn't run.

He invited us inside.

"I wondered when you'd come."

I sat across from him.

"Why did you help my mother?"

He stared at the ocean.

"Because I believed she was right."

"About what?"

"Your father."

He told us a story I'd never heard.

My father had discovered that someone inside Vance Global was stealing money.

He suspected Arthur.

But the evidence pointed toward Eleanor.

Richard had helped her hide the transfers.

Then he realized the truth.

Eleanor wasn't simply stealing.

She was building leverage.

She wanted enough financial control to force my father out.

"But why continue after her arrest?"

Richard looked at me.

"I wasn't."

"Then who was?"

He slid a photograph across the table.

A young man stood beside Eleanor.

I recognized him.

My cousin.

Ethan Vance.

Arthur's son.

I had met him only twice.

Richard continued.

"He believed the company belonged to his branch of the family."

"How much does he control?"

"Enough to cause damage."

I stood.

"Where is he?"

Richard gave me an address.

We found Ethan that night.

He wasn't hiding.

He was waiting.

"I don't want to fight you," he said.

"Then stop."

"You think this is about money."

"It isn't?"

"No."

He looked at Victoria.

"It's about what our family did to each other."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Ethan admitted the truth.

He had continued accessing the hidden account because he wanted to expose Eleanor.

He had sent the anonymous photograph to the hospital.

My anger returned.

"You terrified my wife."

"I needed you to understand how dangerous they were."

"You could have killed someone."

"I know."

His voice broke.

"I'm sorry."

The case became even more complicated.

Ethan agreed to cooperate with investigators.

In exchange, he wanted one thing.

His father's name cleared of one accusation.

We negotiated.

The truth came out.

Arthur had committed crimes.

But some of the worst accusations against him had been fabricated by Eleanor.

For years, our family had been destroying itself with lies.

The final court proceedings took months.

Eleanor was convicted.

Arthur was convicted.

Richard received immunity in exchange for cooperation.

Daniel rebuilt his reputation.

Victoria officially became a member of the Vance family.

And Clara?

She finally stopped looking over her shoulder.

One year after the night beneath the table, we returned to the same dining room.

I had rebuilt everything.

New table.

New chairs.

New memories.

Clara entered carrying Nathaniel.

He was now walking.

Victoria brought dessert.

Daniel arrived with his wife.

There was laughter.

Real laughter.

No humiliation.

No fear.

No secrets.

I looked at Clara.

"Ready?"

She smiled.

"For what?"

I reached beneath the table.

She laughed.

"What are you doing?"

I pulled out a small box.

Her eyes widened.

"Sebastian."

"Relax."

I opened it.

Inside was a pair of gold earrings.

Not the same ones.

A new pair.

But designed to resemble the earrings she had sold years ago to save us.

Clara covered her mouth.

"I remember those."

"I never forgot."

She cried.

I took her hand.

"You gave up everything when I had nothing."

She shook her head.

"We built it together."

Nathaniel suddenly crawled beneath the table.

Everyone laughed.

Clara looked down.

"Our son."

I smiled.

"At least he's under there for the right reason."

He emerged holding a spoon.

The room erupted in laughter.

And for the first time, the table meant something different.

It wasn't a place of humiliation.

It was a place where our family gathered.

Where we ate together.

May you like

Where we told the truth.

Where nobody had to earn the right to sit.
