Chapter 8 - My Father's Final Letter

My father's letter changed everything.
He had known Eleanor was dangerous.
He had suspected she was manipulating the family.
But he had never understood how far she would go.
The letter explained why he had searched for Victoria.
Why he had created a private trust.
Why he had kept certain assets outside the main family structure.
And then came the revelation.
The original controlling shares of Vance Global were not entirely mine.
They belonged to Victoria.
My father had placed them in trust for both of us.
Eleanor had spent decades trying to erase that arrangement.
If she had succeeded, she would have controlled nearly everything.
Victoria read the letter silently.
Then she looked at me.
"So we're partners."
I smiled.
"Looks that way."
She laughed.
It was the first time I had heard my sister laugh.
We rebuilt the company together.
Daniel stayed.
Not because I forgot what he had done.
Because he had eventually chosen courage over fear.
He accepted a reduced position and spent months helping investigators dismantle the network Eleanor had built.
The board changed.
Security changed.
Our household staff changed.
And Clara?
She changed too.
She became stronger.
Not because the experience hadn't hurt her.
Because she refused to let it define her.
One afternoon, she asked me to drive her somewhere.
"Where?"
"You'll see."
She took me to a small community center.
Inside were pregnant women receiving free meals, medical assistance, and counseling.
Clara smiled.
"I want to fund this."
I looked at her.
"How much?"
"Enough."
I laughed.
"You married a billionaire."
"No."
She shook her head.
"I married a man who once delivered pizzas."
I smiled.
"That's still me."
She kissed me.
We created the Clara Vance Foundation.
Its first program provided emergency food, transportation, and legal support for pregnant women facing domestic abuse or financial isolation.
Clara insisted on anonymity.
She didn't want publicity.
She simply wanted women to know they had somewhere to go.
Months passed.
Nathaniel grew stronger.
His laugh filled the house.
Victoria became part of our family.
Sunday dinners were no longer performances.
They were loud, messy, ordinary.
Exactly what Clara had always wanted.
But one evening, the past returned.
A letter arrived from prison.
From Eleanor.
I almost threw it away.
Clara stopped me.
"Read it."
"Why?"
"Because sometimes closure comes from hearing the truth."
I opened it.
Eleanor didn't apologize.
She blamed everyone.
My father.
Victoria.
Clara.
Even me.
But at the bottom was one sentence that made me stop.
Arthur never told you about the second account.
I immediately called Marcus.
"What second account?"
"We'll find out."
Within forty-eight hours, we discovered a hidden offshore account.
Money was still moving.
Someone was accessing it.
And Eleanor had no access from prison.
Arthur was also incarcerated.
Daniel checked the transaction records.
The transfers had begun after both arrests.
Someone else was still working.
And then we found the name.
A former Vance Global executive.
Someone who had disappeared before the scandal became public.
Someone Eleanor had never mentioned.
The man was my father's former personal assistant.
May you like
His name was Richard Cole.
And he had been missing for twelve years.
