Chapter 19 - THE WOMAN WHO FINALLY CONFESSED

The courtroom was silent.
Eleanor entered wearing prison clothing.
She looked smaller than I remembered.
But her eyes were unchanged.
Cold.
Calculating.
Her attorney presented the case.
Sebastian was unstable.
Emotionally compromised.
Financially reckless.
Unfit to control Nathaniel's inheritance.
Then my attorney stood.
"We have one witness."
The courtroom doors opened.
Victoria entered.
Then Evelyn.
Then Richard.
Then Daniel.
One by one, they testified.
Every lie Eleanor had told collapsed.
But she still refused to confess.
Until Clara took the stand.
She walked slowly.
She didn't look at Eleanor.
She looked at the judge.
"My husband wasn't perfect."
I lowered my eyes.
"But he came home."
She continued.
"When I was afraid, he listened."
"When I was hungry, he fed me."
"When I was isolated, he brought me home."
Then she turned toward Eleanor.
"And when someone tried to convince me that I didn't deserve a seat at the table, Sebastian gave me his."
The courtroom was silent.
Then Clara produced one final piece of evidence.
A recording.
Eleanor's voice.
Recorded years earlier.
She admitted everything.
The table.
The financial manipulation.
The forged documents.
The plan to take Nathaniel.
The judge listened.
Eleanor's face slowly collapsed.
When the recording ended, she looked at me.
"You think this makes you better than me?"
I shook my head.
"No."
"Then why?"
"Because I don't want to become you."
The judge ruled.
Eleanor's guardianship claim was denied.
The trust was placed under independent supervision.
Nathaniel remained with us.
Outside the courthouse, Clara hugged me.
"It's over."
I kissed her forehead.
"Yes."
For the first time, I believed her.
Then my phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice whispered:
"Sebastian?"
"Who is this?"
"You don't know me."
"Then why call?"
"Because I know who your grandfather was working for."
My blood froze.
"Who?"
She whispered:
"The Vance family wasn't the real target."
I looked at Clara.
"What was?"
"The government."
The call ended.
A second message arrived.
A photograph.
It showed a classified-looking document.
Across the top:
May you like
PROJECT VANCE.
And beneath it was my father's name.
