Chapter 6 - The Sister Nobody Knew

The bakery was almost empty when I arrived.

A woman stood behind the counter.

She was in her thirties.

Dark hair.

Green eyes.

The same eyes as my father.

She looked at me.

Then dropped the coffee cup in her hand.

"You came."

I stopped.

"You knew I was coming?"

She nodded.

"I've been waiting twenty years."

Her name was Victoria Lane.

But Lane wasn't her real surname.

She had spent most of her life hiding.

"My mother told me the Vances wanted nothing to do with me."

I shook my head.

"My father spent years searching for you."

She laughed bitterly.

"That's not what I was told."

I showed her the photograph of our father.

She touched it.

"He looks older."

"He died believing you were dead."

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then she told me the truth.

Eleanor had known about her.

Arthur had known.

They had used her existence as leverage over my father.

When he attempted to bring Victoria into the family, Eleanor threatened to expose an old scandal.

"What scandal?"

Victoria looked at me.

"Your father didn't abandon me."

"What happened?"

"He tried to protect me."

She opened a drawer.

Inside was an old envelope.

"My father sent this to me."

I opened it.

It contained letters.

Dozens of them.

Never delivered.

Every year.

Every birthday.

Every Christmas.

My father had written to Victoria.

Eleanor had intercepted them.

I felt sick.

"Why would my mother do this?"

"Control."

Victoria looked at me.

"She wanted your father to believe he had only one heir."

Then I understood.

If I remained the only recognized child, the family trust stayed simple.

But if Victoria appeared, the inheritance became complicated.

Arthur had wanted the company.

Eleanor had wanted control.

And my wife had become an obstacle because I loved her.

"What did they want from Clara?"

Victoria's expression changed.

"Your mother believed Clara could be pressured into signing away her rights."

"She refused."

"That's why they tried to destroy her."

I stared at the table.

"They almost killed my wife."

Victoria reached across.

"Then don't let them win."

I looked at her.

"Will you help me?"

She smiled sadly.

"I've been waiting my whole life for my family to ask."

We returned to Vance Global together.

Daniel had gathered the board.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Bank records.

Security footage.

Forged signatures.

Recorded threats.

Hospital evidence.

But we needed one thing.

Eleanor's confession.

And we knew she wouldn't give it easily.

So we built a trap.

We leaked false information that Victoria possessed a document proving she was the rightful controlling heir.

Within hours, Arthur made a move.

He filed an emergency lawsuit.

Then Eleanor's attorney demanded access to the family trust.

Exactly as predicted.

The trap worked.

Arthur transferred money.

Eleanor contacted Daniel.

The conversation was recorded.

"Once Sebastian is removed, we control everything."

Daniel asked:

"And Clara?"

Eleanor answered:

"She'll be irrelevant."

I listened to the recording three times.

Then I called the police.

But before they could act, Arthur disappeared.

And Eleanor somehow obtained bail.

That evening, Clara called me.

Her voice sounded frightened.

"Sebastian?"

"I'm here."

"There is someone outside my hospital window."

My heart stopped.

"Don't move."

I ran.

When I reached her room, she was safe.

But on the window was a single envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Eleanor and Arthur.

On the back:

Come alone.

I knew it was a trap.

But I also knew something else.

They had underestimated me.

I wasn't the broke young man my mother had once controlled.

I was a husband.

May you like

A father.

And a brother who had finally found his family.
