Chapter 5 - Margaret’s Wrath

The truth began to unravel not in a dark alley, but inside a secure digital server room on Wall Street.

By 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, Nathaniel sat in the dimly lit office of Frank Miller, a former federal cyber-crimes investigator who now worked exclusively for high-net-worth clients who needed secrets unearthed without court orders. The air was thick with the scent of lukewarm coffee and burnt electronics.

Frank spun his dual monitors toward Nathaniel.

“Your girl Vanessa is thorough,” Frank said, tapping the screen with a battered pen. “She used three different shell companies registered in Delaware to funnel money into an off-market digital marketing firm. But she made one mistake: she paid for the domain registration of the spoofed burner phone with a credit card linked to her personal travel rewards account.”

Nathaniel leaned in close, his eyes burning. “What are you telling me?”

“The threat text she showed you on Tuesday night? ‘You should watch your back’?” Frank hit a key, bringing up an itemized cellular transmission log. “It was sent from a laptop connected to the Wi-Fi at the Starbucks on 58th and 5th. Two blocks from her apartment. The MAC address on that laptop belongs to her personal assistant, Chloe Davis.”

Nathaniel felt the blood drain entirely from his head. His hands gripped the edge of Frank’s desk so tightly the wood groaned.

“She staged the threat,” Nathaniel whispered.

“Not just the threat,” Frank said grimly. “Look at this surveillance footage I pulled from the parking garage across the street from Vanessa’s building. That dark sedan she claimed was stalking her? It’s a hired town car from an elite livery service. Hired by Vanessa. The driver was instructed to circle the block three times between 11:30 p.m. and midnight, park under the streetlight for five minutes, and then drive away.”

The room seemed to spin violently around Nathaniel.

At 11:48 p.m., Clare was bleeding inside her body.

At 11:48 p.m., Nathaniel had turned his phone facedown because Vanessa was weeping against his chest, pretending to be hunted by phantom killers.

It was all an orchestration. Vanessa had known Clare’s surgery was that morning. She knew Nathaniel would be emotionally vulnerable, torn between relief and corporate tension. She had manufactured a crisis so elaborate, so calculated, that it ensured Nathaniel would spend those critical midnight hours in her arms, ignoring the rest of the world. She had engineered Clare’s abandonment.

“There’s more,” Frank added, his voice lowering with genuine sympathy. “Look at the emails sent to the board members over the last three weeks. All originating from an anonymous proton mail server, but traced back to the same digital footprint. She was feeding rumors to the institutional investors that Clare was mentally unstable, that the stress of the organ donation was causing emotional erraticism, and that the Callahan Foundation was at risk of financial mismanagement unless someone else took the reins.”

Nathaniel didn't speak. The rage inside him was no longer loud or erratic. It went ice cold, freezing into an unbearable, diamond-hard clarity.

He had traded a queen for a viper.

He had abandoned a woman who had bled for his mother, who had built his life from the concrete up, for an illusion engineered by a psychopath with a PR license.

“Frank,” Nathaniel said, his voice flat, devoid of human emotion.

“Yeah?”

“Freeze all Callahan Foundation accounts linked to her signature. Revoke her security badges. Send this dossier directly to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. Mail fraud, corporate wire fraud, extortion. I want her ruined before the markets open on Monday.”

“Consider it done,” Frank nodded. “And what about your wife?”

Nathaniel stood up. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the platinum wedding band he had carried with him every second of the last four days.

“Did you find the transport flight?”

Frank hesitated, then slid a yellow legal pad across the desk. Written on it was a tail number and an address:

Pemberton Cove Medical Sanctuary. Isleboro, Maine.

“Mercer’s family compound,” Frank said quietly. “It’s entirely off-grid. Private security, medical staff on site, guarded by water. You won't be able to just walk in there, Nathaniel. Mercer owns the island.”

“I don't care if he owns the ocean,” Nathaniel said. “Fuel the King Air at Teterboro. I’m leaving in twenty minutes.”
