Chapter 16 - Jealousy Looks Terrible on BillionairesNathaniel arrived in Newport the following Saturday.

He was suspiciously casual.

“How was sailing?”

Clare stared at him.

“Margaret?”

“Andrew.”

“Your entire family is terrible.”

“Yes.”

She continued walking.

Nathaniel followed.

“Did you have fun?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“He cooked.”

Nathaniel’s jaw tightened.

“Wonderful.”

“Fresh lobster.”

“Excellent.”

“And opened a bottle of 1989 Château Margaux.”

Nathaniel stopped.

Clare turned.

“You okay?”

“Perfect.”

“You look constipated.”

“I’m delighted Julian has access to grapes.”

Clare burst out laughing.

Nathaniel stared.

“You're doing this deliberately.”

“Doing what?”

“Making me jealous.”

She stepped closer.

“Is it working?”

Nathaniel looked down at her.

“Spectacularly.”

For several seconds, the teasing disappeared.

Something warmer replaced it.

Clare touched his coat.

“You know what the strangest part is?”

“What?”

“I never saw you jealous before.”

Nathaniel smiled sadly.

“Because I thought you could never leave.”

There it was.

The truth.

Clare’s smile faded.

Nathaniel continued.

“I don't think that anymore.”

She studied him.

Then slipped her hand into his.

Nathaniel looked down.

He didn't squeeze too tightly.

He didn't pull her closer.

He simply held it.

They walked the harbor together.
