Chapter 20 - Vanessa’s Last MoveVanessa Whitmore had been sentenced to six years in federal prison.

But she had left one final weapon behind.
A journalist contacted Clare.
He claimed to possess recordings from the night of her surgery.
Recordings of Nathaniel speaking about her.
Clare refused.
Then the journalist published them.
The edited clip exploded online.
Nathaniel’s voice:
“Clare belongs to my past.”
Another:
“Vanessa understands who I am now.”
Clare heard them alone.
Her stomach turned.
Nathaniel called immediately.
She didn't answer.
He called once.
Then stopped.
That mattered.
He sent one message:
I won't chase you. I won't explain unless you ask. Whatever you need, I will respect it.
Clare cried.
Not because the recordings revealed something new.
Because they reminded her exactly how small she had once felt.
Three days passed.
Then Clare drove to Nathaniel’s rented house.
He opened the door.
His face was pale.
She held up her phone.
“Did you say it?”
Nathaniel didn't lie.
“Yes.”
Her eyes filled.
“Why?”
“Because I was arrogant. Because Vanessa fed the ugliest part of me, and I liked how it felt. Because I became someone I’m ashamed of.”
Clare’s tears fell.
Nathaniel did not approach.
“I cannot erase that man,” he said. “I can only make sure he never controls my choices again.”
Clare whispered:
“I hate him.”
“So do I.”
“But you're him.”
“I was.”
She stared.
Nathaniel’s voice broke.
“And if you decide that means you cannot love who I am now, I will understand.”
May you like
Clare cried harder.
Because he finally understood love could not demand acquittal.
