Chapter 9 - THE PRICE OF FORGIVENESS

Dante had negotiated with men who controlled entire cities.

He had stared down armed rivals.

He had survived assassination attempts, betrayals, and years of violence.

But none of those moments had prepared him for seeing Isabella held at gunpoint.

"Let her go," he said.

Valentina laughed.

"You're still giving orders."

"Tell me what you want."

"The original will. The account access. And your brother."

Gabriel stepped forward.

"I'm here."

Valentina glanced at him.

"You're useful, Nicholas. Don't mistake that for being important."

Gabriel's face hardened.

Dante studied her.

"Why are you doing this?"

"Because your father stole my life."

"He didn't raise you."

"He gave you everything."

Valentina's voice cracked.

"You got the name, the house, the company, the protection. I got a photograph and a woman who told me my father was dead."

Dante understood something then.

Valentina had not simply wanted money.

She had wanted recognition.

She had wanted the family that had rejected her.

But instead of seeking justice, she had chosen to destroy everyone connected to it.

"You're my sister," Dante said.

Her expression changed.

"Don't."

"It's the truth."

"Don't call me that."

"Then tell me what you want me to call you."

Valentina pressed the gun harder against Isabella.

"I want you to understand what it feels like to lose everything."

Dante glanced at Marco.

A fraction of a second.

That was all Marco needed.

He moved toward the electrical panel.

The lights went out.

A gunshot cracked through the warehouse.

Someone screamed.

Dante rushed forward.

When the emergency lights activated, Isabella was on the floor.

Valentina had disappeared.

Dante dropped beside his wife.

"Isabella!"

She was conscious.

Her hands were trembling.

"I'm okay."

He looked at her stomach.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

He held her face.

"Don't scare me like that again."

She stared at him.

"Then stop giving people reasons to hurt me."

He had no answer.

Gabriel appeared behind them.

"Valentina escaped through the loading bay."

Marco was already moving.

"Get the vehicles!"

But Dante stayed beside Isabella.

He helped her stand.

For several seconds, they simply looked at each other.

Then she whispered, "There's something else you need to know."

"What?"

"Valentina didn't come for the money."

Dante frowned.

"Then what?"

"She came for the original recording."

"What recording?"

Isabella looked toward Gabriel.

He slowly removed a small device from his jacket.

"Your father's final confession."

He pressed play.

Lorenzo's voice filled the warehouse.

If you are hearing this, then the people I tried to protect have failed to understand what I did.

I was not murdered by Elena.

I was not murdered by Nicholas.

I was killed by the person who stood beside me that night and promised to protect the family.

A pause.

Then Lorenzo continued.

The name is Arthur Whitmore.

Dante stared.

Arthur had been at the medical center.

He had given them the will.

He had pretended to help.

The recording continued.

He arranged the murder, stole the original inheritance documents, and manipulated every person in this family.

Dante's phone rang.

Marco.

"Boss, we have a problem."

"What?"

"Arthur is gone."

Dante looked at Isabella.

Marco continued.

"He took your mother."

Dante closed his eyes.

Arthur had been one step ahead of them.

"Where?"

"We're tracing his vehicle."

"Find him."

"Dante, there's something else."

"What?"

"Valentina called."

Dante's expression hardened.

"What did she say?"

Marco hesitated.

"She said Arthur has the original recording."

Dante looked at Gabriel.

"But you just played it."

Gabriel nodded.

"That was a copy."

Marco's voice dropped.

"Arthur says he has the original. And he's willing to trade it."

"For what?"

There was a long silence.

Then Marco answered.

"For the baby."

Dante's hand tightened around the phone.

Isabella heard every word.

She took a step backward.

"No."

Dante turned toward her.

"Isabella—"

"No. Absolutely not."

He moved closer.

"He's not getting near you."

She looked at him with terrified eyes.

"He's not asking for money, Dante. He's asking for our child."

Dante held her hands.

"Then he'll have to come through me."

But Isabella was staring at the ultrasound photograph she had kept inside her purse.

And when she finally spoke, her voice was barely audible.

"There's something I haven't told you."

Dante looked at her.

"What?"

She swallowed.

"The clinic didn't just find a heartbeat."

She took a folded medical report from her bag.

"The doctor found a second gestational sac."

Dante stared at the document.

Two embryos.

Two heartbeats.

Two children.

May you like

And Arthur Whitmore knew.
