Chapter 10 - TWO HEARTBEATS AND ONE LAST SECRET

For the first time in his life, Dante Russo was afraid of the future.

Not because of a rival family.

Not because of an approaching war.

Not because someone wanted his money or his territory.

He was afraid because two tiny lives depended on decisions he could not make for them.

Twins.

Isabella was carrying twins.

He sat beside her in the private medical room, holding the report.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Her eyes filled.

"I found out during the appointment on our wedding day. The doctor wanted to confirm everything with another scan."

"And then you called me."

"Yes."

He looked down.

She had tried to share the happiest news of their lives.

He had chosen another woman.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

Isabella turned toward the window.

"I know."

"No. I don't think you do."

He placed the report on the table.

"I spent my whole life believing that being feared meant being safe. I thought if I controlled every person, every business, every situation, nothing could hurt me."

He looked at her.

"Then I hurt the only person who ever made me feel like I didn't need to control anything."

Isabella said nothing.

Dante continued.

"I can't undo what I did. I can't ask you to forget it. But I want to be there for these children, whether you ever forgive me or not."

She finally looked at him.

"Then start by understanding that they're not yours to claim simply because you're their father."

He nodded.

"You're right."

"And I'm not returning to your estate."

"All right."

"I want my own home. My own security. My own decisions."

"Done."

"And Valentina is never coming near these children."

Dante's expression hardened.

"She won't."

Isabella studied him.

"You're not going to kill her?"

He looked down.

"I don't know what I would do if she hurt you."

"That's not an answer."

He took a breath.

"Then I'll give you one. I won't let anger make decisions for me anymore."

It was the first promise he had made that Isabella believed might be worth keeping.

But the danger was not over.

Arthur Whitmore had taken Elena.

And he had demanded the twins.

Dante arranged a meeting at an abandoned country estate outside the city.

He went with Marco and Gabriel.

Isabella remained at a secure medical facility with two trusted guards.

Before leaving, Dante kissed her forehead.

She didn't kiss him back.

But she didn't pull away.

That was enough.

The estate was surrounded by bare trees and old stone walls.

Arthur waited in the library.

Elena sat beside him.

She looked frightened but unharmed.

Dante entered alone.

"Let her go."

Arthur smiled.

"You've grown sentimental."

"Let my mother go."

"Your mother has always been the problem."

Dante moved closer.

"You murdered my father."

"I saved your family."

"You stole the inheritance."

"I protected it."

Arthur's expression became cold.

"Your father wanted to give everything to Nicholas. He believed you were too emotional to lead the family. He thought your brother was the future."

Dante looked toward Gabriel.

Gabriel stood in the doorway.

"Maybe he was right," he said.

Dante turned.

Arthur continued.

"Your father wanted to destroy the empire before it destroyed his children. I couldn't allow that."

"So you killed him."

"I made a difficult decision."

Dante took another step.

"You're going to make another one."

Arthur laughed.

"Do you really think you can threaten me? I know every account, every secret, every name connected to your organization."

"Then you know what happens when someone threatens my family."

Arthur reached into his jacket.

Dante raised his weapon.

But Arthur did not pull out a gun.

He produced a small envelope.

"Your mother's final letter."

Dante looked at Elena.

She began crying.

"Don't listen to him, Dante."

Arthur opened the envelope.

"Your mother wrote this before she disappeared. She wanted you to know why she had protected Gabriel."

He handed Dante the letter.

Dante read it.

My darling son,

If you are reading this, then the truth has finally found you.

There is something I never told you about your father.

Lorenzo did not know the entire story of Nicholas's birth. He believed Margaret was the boy's mother, but the woman who gave birth to him was someone else.

I discovered her identity only after the boy had been taken away.

Dante stopped reading.

He looked up.

"Who was she?"

Elena covered her mouth.

Arthur smiled.

Dante returned to the letter.

The woman was my sister.

The room went silent.

Dante looked at Elena.

"Your sister?"

She nodded through tears.

"Margaret was my sister's name. I lied because I thought I was protecting the family."

Dante looked at Gabriel.

"Then why did the records say Margaret was the mother?"

Arthur answered.

"Because the woman who raised him was not the woman who gave birth to him."

Gabriel stared at the floor.

For the first time, he looked as confused as Dante felt.

Elena continued.

"I was the one who arranged his adoption. I was afraid Lorenzo would take him away. But I never imagined what he would eventually become."

Dante looked at the letter again.

The final paragraph contained another revelation.

There is one more thing, my son.

The woman who gave birth to Nicholas was not the only person I helped disappear.

I also protected a little girl.

She was born in 1994.

Her name is Valentina.

Dante's mind raced.

Valentina had been born in 1994.

But if she was his mother's niece, then she was not his half-sister.

She was his cousin.

Arthur's entire explanation had been another lie.

Dante slowly raised his eyes.

"You told me Valentina was my father's daughter."

Arthur shrugged.

"That was what she believed."

"Why?"

"Because it made her useful."

Gabriel stepped forward.

"Where is the original recording?"

Arthur smiled.

"Somewhere you will never find it."

Dante's phone vibrated.

A message from Marco.

We found Valentina.

Then another.

She's at the medical center.

Dante's blood turned cold.

He called Isabella.

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

Then a text arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph.

Isabella was standing beside a hospital window.

She looked pale but unharmed.

Behind her, a woman in a nurse's uniform held a medical folder.

The message beneath it contained only one sentence.

You found your mother. Now find the woman who delivered your children.

Dante looked at Arthur.

For the first time, the older man appeared genuinely frightened.

"Who sent this?"

Arthur shook his head.

"I don't know."

Dante grabbed him by the collar.

"Who is at the hospital?"

Arthur whispered something that made Dante release him.

"The woman who gave birth to Nicholas."

Dante stared.

"She's alive?"

Arthur nodded.

"And she's been waiting twenty-seven years to meet her daughter."

Dante turned toward the door.

Then his phone rang.

Isabella.

He answered immediately.

"Baby?"

Her voice was trembling.

"Dante, listen to me carefully."

"Where are you?"

"At the hospital."

"Are you safe?"

A pause.

Then she whispered:

"The doctor says the twins are fine. But someone has been changing my medical records."

Dante's stomach tightened.

"Who?"

"I don't know. But there's something else."

"What?"

"The woman who brought me my test results said she knew your mother."

Dante looked toward Elena.

Isabella continued.

"She said she was the one who helped Elena disappear."

"What's her name?"

A long silence followed.

Then Isabella said:

"Margaret Bell."

Dante stopped breathing.

He looked at Gabriel.

His brother's face had gone completely white.

"That's impossible," Gabriel whispered.

Dante pressed the phone against his ear.

"Isabella, get away from her."

But his wife was already crying.

"Dante, there's something written on the back of the medical report."

"What?"

"She wrote that our children have an older sister."

The line went dead.

## EPILOGUE — THE FAMILY SECRET

Six months later, the Russo estate no longer looked like a fortress.

Dante had dismissed half the security staff, closed several questionable businesses, and transferred control of the legitimate companies into a new family trust.

Gabriel had accepted his place in the family, though he still refused to live in the mansion.

Elena had moved into a small house overlooking Lake Michigan.

And Isabella had given birth to two healthy children.

A boy and a girl.

Dante named neither child without Isabella's approval.

Their son was named Lorenzo, after the grandfather they had never known.

Their daughter was named Elena.

Not because Dante wanted to honor his mother.

Because Isabella did.

The first time Dante held both babies, he cried.

He didn't hide it.

He didn't turn away.

And Isabella watched him from the hospital bed.

For the first time in months, she reached for his hand.

"You're going to be a good father," she whispered.

He looked at her.

"I hope I can become a good husband too."

"That will take longer."

"I know."

She smiled faintly.

"But you're allowed to try."

It wasn't forgiveness.

Not completely.

But it was a beginning.

Three weeks later, Dante received a package at the estate.

There was no return address.

Inside was a small silver bracelet.

A hospital identification tag.

And a photograph of a little girl, approximately six years old, standing in front of a white house.

On the back, someone had written:

She has your eyes, Dante.

He stared at the photograph for a long time.

Then he turned it over again.

A second message had been written beneath the first.

Ask Isabella what happened in Boston before your wedding.

Dante slowly looked toward the staircase.

Isabella was upstairs, reading to their twins.

He could hear her voice.

Soft.

Warm.

Alive.

He placed the photograph inside his desk drawer.

For the first time, he decided not to investigate immediately.

Some secrets needed to be approached carefully.

But as he closed the drawer, his phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

One message.

Congratulations on your new family, Mr. Russo. Your children are safe. For now.

Dante stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

But the girl in the photograph is not Valentina's daughter.

A final message followed.

She's yours.

Dante looked toward the staircase.

Upstairs, Isabella laughed softly.

May you like

And somewhere in the city, a little girl who carried his blood was waiting for him to discover she existed.

THE END... FOR NOW.
