Chapter 7 - THE MOTHER IN THE SHADOWS

Dante had buried his mother six years earlier.

He remembered the funeral.

The black cars.

The closed casket.

The priest's trembling voice.

He remembered standing beside his father, refusing to cry because Lorenzo had told him that men who ruled empires did not show weakness.

Now Isabella was telling him that Elena Russo might still be alive.

"Where is she?" he asked.

"I don't know."

"Who sent the photograph?"

"A number I couldn't trace."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Isabella's expression hardened.

"Because I thought it was a trap."

Dante looked at the photograph again.

His mother appeared older, but unmistakable.

She was standing outside a small white building with a garden.

The background looked European.

"Marco."

"Yes?"

"Find out where this photograph was taken."

Marco examined it.

"There's a sign in the background."

He enlarged the image.

A few letters became visible.

A medical center in Geneva.

Dante immediately ordered a private flight.

But Isabella refused to go with him.

"I need to see a doctor here."

He nodded immediately.

"Of course."

"I also need you to understand something."

He looked at her.

"I'm not coming back to the estate."

"I won't ask you to."

"And you don't get to decide where I live."

"I know."

She watched him carefully.

"Do you?"

He wanted to tell her that he would change everything.

That he would end his relationship with Valentina.

That he would give up half his empire if it meant getting another chance.

But he had already made too many promises.

So he said nothing.

Instead, he arranged for a private obstetrician to examine her at a secure medical center.

The examination lasted forty minutes.

When the doctor finally entered the consultation room, Dante stood immediately.

"How is she?"

The doctor looked at Isabella first.

"The pregnancy is progressing normally."

Dante exhaled.

"And the baby?"

"There's a heartbeat."

He closed his eyes.

A heartbeat.

His child was alive.

Isabella's eyes filled with tears.

For the first time since the wedding, she allowed herself to smile.

Dante watched her.

He had never seen anything more beautiful.

But when he reached for her hand, she gently moved it away.

"Not yet," she whispered.

He nodded.

That evening, Dante and Marco flew to Geneva.

The medical center was located outside the city, surrounded by pine trees and a high stone wall.

The director met them at the entrance.

"Mr. Russo. We've been expecting you."

Dante's expression hardened.

"Who told you I was coming?"

The director looked uncomfortable.

"Your mother."

He led them through a private corridor to a room at the end.

Dante stopped outside the door.

For the first time in his life, he was afraid to open one.

Then he turned the handle.

A woman sat beside the window.

Her hair was silver.

Her shoulders were thinner.

But when she turned, Dante recognized her eyes.

"Mom?"

Elena Russo stood slowly.

"Dante."

He crossed the room.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then he embraced her.

She held his face with both hands.

"My beautiful boy."

He was thirty-eight years old, but in that moment he felt like the child who used to run into her bedroom after nightmares.

"Why did you let me bury you?"

Elena began to cry.

"Because your father would have killed you if he knew I was alive."

Dante stepped back.

"What did he do?"

She glanced toward Marco.

"Your father was not the only person who wanted the Russo inheritance."

Dante felt his stomach tighten.

Elena continued.

"When I discovered Lorenzo's second family, I learned that he had been secretly financing a criminal organization overseas. He wanted to transfer control of the company to someone outside the family."

"Who?"

Elena looked toward the door.

A nurse entered, pushing a wheelchair.

In it sat an elderly man.

Dante recognized him from the old family photographs.

His father's lawyer.

Arthur Whitmore.

But Arthur was supposed to have died ten years earlier.

He looked directly at Dante.

"Your mother is telling you the truth."

Dante's hand moved toward his weapon.

"Why are you here?"

Arthur smiled faintly.

"Because I wrote the second will."

He reached into his jacket and removed a sealed document.

"Your father left the empire to three people."

Dante took the envelope.

"Who?"

Arthur's answer was almost a whisper.

"Your brother, Nicholas. You. And Valentina."

Dante opened the document.

The first page carried his father's signature.

The second page contained a condition.

The inheritance would be activated only when Dante's first legitimate child was born.

But the final page contained a handwritten amendment.

It had been signed two days before Lorenzo died.

Dante read it.

Then read it again.

His father had added one final instruction.

The child must never be allowed to carry the Russo name.

Elena began sobbing.

And before Dante could ask why, Arthur revealed the reason.

May you like

"Because your father knew the child would expose who really killed him."
