Chapter 9 - THE CHOICE BETWEEN BLOOD AND LOVE

Isabella arrived with lawyers.

She claimed Maximilian was mentally unfit to control the family assets.

Her evidence?

His history of trauma.

His years of isolation.

His emotional instability after his brother's death.

And Clara's pregnancy.

She called Clara a manipulator.

The accusation devastated her.

For the first time, Clara wondered whether she had become a weakness.

She told Maximilian she wanted to leave.

He refused.

“Why?”

“Because your family keeps using me against you.”

“You're not a weakness.”

“I am.”

“No.”

He took her hands.

“You're the reason I became strong enough to choose a different life.”

She cried.

“I don't want to destroy everything.”

“You didn't.”

He looked at their son sleeping nearby.

“You gave me something worth protecting that isn't money.”

The court case continued.

Then Clara discovered something.

Isabella's financial records contained a signature.

Her father's.

But the date was impossible.

He had been in the hospital that day.

Someone had forged it.

Clara found the discrepancy.

Maximilian's lawyers used it.

The case collapsed.

Isabella's scheme was exposed.

She had been secretly diverting money for years.

She was arrested.

For the first time, Maximilian's family history was no longer a weapon.

It was simply history.

Something behind them.

Not ahead.

That evening, Maximilian took Clara to the rooftop.

Boston glittered below.

“I used to think power meant nobody could hurt you.”

Clara leaned against him.

“And now?”

“Now I think power is knowing who you're willing to protect without controlling them.”

She smiled.

“You're learning.”

“I have a good teacher.”

She kissed his cheek.

Their son slept peacefully in his stroller.

Maximilian looked at him.

Then at Clara.

“I want another child.”

Clara laughed.

“You're insane.”

“Probably.”

“Absolutely not.”

“Understood.”

She smiled.

After a moment, she added,

“Ask me again in five years.”

His eyebrows lifted.

“I'll put it on my calendar.”

She laughed.

The city lights shimmered.

And for the first time, Maximilian didn't feel like a man waiting for the next attack.

He felt like a husband.

May you like

A father.

A man with a home.
