Chapter 4 - THE ENEMY WEARING A FRIENDLY FACE

Maximilian had spent years learning how to survive secrets.

He knew secrets could protect people.

He also knew they could destroy them.

Clara deserved the truth.

But some truths were dangerous.

“The man who attacked me that night wasn't trying to kill me.”

Clara stared.

“What?”

“He was trying to force me out of the city.”

“Why?”

“I had discovered someone inside my organization was selling information.”

“Who?”

“We didn't know.”

“And Vanessa?”

“She wasn't involved.”

Clara studied him.

“You trust her?”

“No.”

The answer came instantly.

“Then why is she here?”

“Because her family has business connections with mine.”

Clara nodded slowly.

She remembered Vanessa's warning.

Then something occurred to her.

“The hospital.”

“What about it?”

“When I tried to find you after the blackout, someone blocked my inquiry.”

Maximilian's expression changed.

“Who knew you had contacted the hotel?”

“I don't know.”

“Think.”

Clara closed her eyes.

“One person.”

“Who?”

“The hotel manager.”

Maximilian immediately called one of his investigators.

Within hours, they discovered something unexpected.

The manager had been paid to erase Clara's inquiry.

The payment came from a shell company.

The shell company was connected to a private security firm.

And that firm had once been owned by Vanessa's father.

Maximilian's blood ran cold.

He confronted Vanessa.

“You lied to me.”

She remained calm.

“I didn't.”

“You knew Clara was the woman from the hotel.”

Vanessa's expression changed.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Six months.”

“You knew she was pregnant?”

“I suspected.”

“You blocked her from finding me.”

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I was protecting you.”

“You were protecting yourself.”

She looked wounded.

“I love you.”

Maximilian's voice was ice.

“That stopped being an excuse years ago.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“She'll destroy you.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“People like you destroy people.”

Vanessa's face hardened.

“You'll regret choosing her.”

“No.”

Maximilian walked away.

“I already regret not finding her sooner.”

Meanwhile, Clara was learning something even stranger.

Her mother was alive.

She had always believed Elena Jenkins had died when Clara was a child.

But a hospital record revealed Elena had been living under another name in Michigan.

Clara couldn't breathe.

She called the number.

A woman answered.

“Hello?”

Clara whispered,

“Mom?”

Silence.

Then a broken sob.

“Clara?”

Clara sat down.

For years, she had believed she was abandoned.

But Elena explained the truth.

She had disappeared because she was being threatened.

Her husband had become involved with dangerous people.

He had tried to protect the family.

He had failed.

Elena had been forced to leave Clara with relatives because she believed separation would keep her daughter alive.

Clara cried for nearly an hour.

Then Elena said something that changed everything.

“Your father wasn't involved willingly.”

“What?”

“He tried to leave.”

“Who stopped him?”

Elena hesitated.

“The Russo family.”

Clara froze.

She hung up.

Then she confronted Maximilian.

“My father was connected to your family.”

Maximilian stared at her.

“What did you hear?”

“My mother said your family stopped him from leaving.”

His face became pale.

“Clara, your father wasn't working for us.”

“But he knew your father.”

“Yes.”

“Then what happened?”

Maximilian looked away.

“My father made mistakes.”

“Your father hurt mine?”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“My father threatened him.”

Clara's heart broke.

“Why?”

“Because your father had evidence of corruption.”

She stared.

“Evidence of what?”

“Money being stolen.”

“From your family?”

“Yes.”

Clara whispered,

“Then my father wasn't the villain.”

“No.”

Maximilian looked directly into her eyes.

“He was one of the few honest men caught in the middle.”

The truth changed everything.

But neither of them knew that someone had already obtained Clara's mother's records.

Someone was preparing to expose the entire history.

May you like

And that person wasn't Vanessa.

It was someone Maximilian trusted completely.
