Chapter 7 - THE LIE THAT ALMOST DESTROYED THEM

The train station was abandoned.
Snow covered the tracks.
Maximilian's men surrounded the area.
Clara stayed beside him.
Then a car arrived.
The door opened.
Her father stepped out.
Alive.
Clara almost collapsed with relief.
“Dad!”
She ran forward.
Maximilian caught her arm.
“Wait.”
Her father suddenly shouted,
“Don't come closer!”
A second figure appeared behind him.
Vanessa.
Clara stared.
“You?”
Vanessa looked exhausted.
“I didn't do this.”
Maximilian drew her aside.
“Explain.”
“Your uncle did.”
Maximilian went still.
His uncle.
The man who had raised him after his father's death.
The man he trusted.
Vanessa continued.
“He's the one who stole the money.”
Maximilian's face hardened.
“And my brother?”
“He ordered it.”
Silence.
Clara looked at her father.
“Is that true?”
Her father nodded.
“Yes.”
He began crying.
“I was supposed to expose him.”
“Why didn't you?”
“Because he threatened your mother.”
Clara's eyes filled.
“So all these years…”
“I thought disappearing would protect you.”
She hugged him.
Maximilian watched silently.
Then his uncle stepped from the shadows.
“You always were sentimental.”
Maximilian turned.
The old man smiled.
“You should have stayed out of family business.”
Maximilian's voice was cold.
“You hurt my brother.”
“You were weak.”
“And Clara's father?”
“He was inconvenient.”
Clara stepped closer to Maximilian.
He immediately positioned himself between her and the threat.
But before anything could escalate, police sirens approached.
Vanessa had called them.
The uncle was arrested.
The old financial records were recovered.
The truth finally came out.
Maximilian's family had been manipulated for years.
Clara's father had never stolen anything.
He had tried to expose corruption.
Her mother's disappearance had been an act of protection.
And Maximilian's brother had been murdered because he had discovered the same truth.
The investigation continued for months.
Maximilian dismantled the parts of his empire connected to criminal activity.
He chose legitimate businesses.
Real estate.
Restaurants.
Shipping.
Security.
He refused to inherit his father's methods.
Clara watched him change.
Not because she demanded it.
Because he finally wanted a different life.
Then Vanessa came to Clara.
“I owe you an apology.”
Clara looked at her.
“You do.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I was jealous.”
“I know.”
“I hurt you.”
“Yes.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“I loved him for years.”
Clara didn't argue.
“But love doesn't mean possession.”
Vanessa smiled sadly.
“I know that now.”
She left.
Clara watched her go.
Then she felt the baby kick.
May you like
She smiled.
For the first time, the future seemed possible.
