Chapter 9 - The Last Recording

Michael Rourke had managed the Moretti family's legitimate businesses for twenty years.
He had attended Lorenzo's mother's funeral, helped arrange Giovanni's medical care, and stood beside Lorenzo during the first violent months of his rise to power.
Lorenzo had trusted him more than almost anyone outside the family.
Now Michael sat across the desk with his hands folded.
"Your father authorized the account transfers," he said. "He knew about the payments."
"You're lying."
"Check the signatures."
Lorenzo threw the documents onto the desk.
"The signatures could have been forged."
"They weren't."
Michael's voice sharpened.
"Giovanni knew Vincent was moving money. He knew the organization was vulnerable. He authorized a contingency plan that would preserve the family if he became incapacitated."
"And that plan included drugging him?"
"No."
Michael looked down.
"That came later."
The room fell silent.
Lorenzo's hands curled into fists.
"Explain."
Michael revealed that Giovanni had discovered an impending betrayal within the organization and secretly arranged for certain funds to be moved beyond Vincent's reach.
The account marked M.R. was intended to protect the legitimate businesses and provide emergency support to family members.
Vincent had eventually discovered the arrangement.
He threatened Michael's wife and children, forcing him to alter the medication records and hide evidence of the conspiracy.
Michael claimed he had never intended Giovanni to remain incapacitated for five years.
"I was trying to buy time," he whispered.
"You let my father suffer."
"I was trying to keep your family alive."
Lorenzo stood so abruptly that his chair struck the wall.
"You let me believe my father was gone. You watched me abandon him."
Michael had no defense.
Then Lorenzo asked the question that mattered most.
"Who ordered the stroke?"
Michael looked at him.
"Your father knows."
Giovanni was waiting in the east wing when Lorenzo entered.
Nora sat beside the fireplace, one hand resting on her belly.
The room had changed completely since her first visit. Fresh curtains framed the windows, warm lamps illuminated the walls, and the wheelchair stood near the fire.
But Giovanni's face looked older.
He had spent hours trying to recover enough strength to explain the truth.
Lorenzo knelt beside him.
"Father, I need you to tell me who ordered the attack."
Giovanni looked toward Nora.
She gently squeezed his hand.
"You can tell him," she whispered.
The old man took a long breath.
"Not... Vincent."
Lorenzo went still.
"Who, then?"
Giovanni struggled to raise his right hand.
He pointed toward the photograph of his family.
Then he whispered a name.
"Maria."
Lorenzo recoiled.
"My mother?"
Giovanni shook his head desperately.
"Not... your mother."
His breathing became labored.
"Her... brother."
Lorenzo stared at him.
Maria had been an only child.
Everyone had said so.
But Giovanni insisted, repeating the words until his voice gave out.
"Brother. Brother."
Nora leaned closer.
"Who is her brother, Mr. Giovanni?"
The old man closed his eyes.
A tear slipped down his cheek.
"Dead man."
Lorenzo understood the implication.
Someone who was supposed to have died years ago had returned to destroy the family.
Vincent might have been the visible enemy.
But the real architect of the conspiracy had remained hidden.
Before Lorenzo could ask another question, Giovanni began coughing violently.
Nora called for the nurse.
The medical team rushed in and stabilized him, but the neurologist warned that another attempt to force speech could cause serious harm.
Lorenzo stood outside the room, shaking with rage and fear.
He had spent five years hunting enemies he could see.
Now he was facing a man who had been dead on paper for fifteen years.
At dawn, Marcus brought Lorenzo a final piece of evidence.
A photograph taken at a private airport three weeks earlier.
Vincent stood beside a second man.
The second man wore a dark overcoat and carried a silver-handled cane.
Lorenzo recognized the face from an old family portrait.
His mother's older brother.
Nicholas Vale.
Nicholas had supposedly died in a warehouse fire when Lorenzo was seventeen.
The official investigation had identified his remains.
The funeral had been private.
And Giovanni had attended it.
Lorenzo stared at the photograph.
"How can this be?"
Marcus placed a second document beside it.
A passenger manifest.
Nicholas Vale had entered the country under a false identity the previous week.
The destination listed on the manifest was the Moretti estate.
Lorenzo looked toward the window.
Beyond the glass, snow continued to fall.
Then his phone rang.
A distorted voice spoke.
"You're looking in the wrong direction, Lorenzo."
"Who is this?"
"The man you think is dead is coming for your father."
Lorenzo gripped the phone.
"Where is he?"
The voice gave a quiet laugh.
"Ask the pregnant maid what she found in the old man's blanket."
The line went dead.
May you like
Lorenzo turned toward the east wing.
For the first time, he wondered whether Nora's kindness had uncovered a secret that even Giovanni had been unable to understand.
