Chapter 7 - The Daughter Nobody Knew Existed

Lorenzo stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
His father had never mentioned a daughter.
His mother had never spoken of another child.
And yet the woman in the photograph wore a pendant Lorenzo recognized immediately.
It had belonged to his mother.
He took the photograph to Giovanni's room.
The old man had been transferred to the private medical wing of the estate, where a neurologist was helping him recover some of his speech and movement.
Lorenzo placed the photograph in front of him.
"Who is she?"
Giovanni's eyes widened.
For several seconds, the old man's breathing became uneven.
"Father, I need you to tell me the truth."
Giovanni moved his right hand toward the photograph.
His fingers trembled.
Then he forced out a name.
"Isabella."
Lorenzo felt the room tilt.
"Who is Isabella?"
Giovanni closed his eyes.
"My... daughter."
Lorenzo stepped back.
"Your daughter?"
Giovanni nodded weakly.
"Before... Maria."
The revelation struck harder than Lorenzo expected.
His father had been married once before he met Lorenzo's mother. The marriage had ended quietly, and the family rarely discussed it.
But no one had ever told Lorenzo that a child had survived.
"Where is she?"
Giovanni's eyes filled with tears.
"Vincent."
Lorenzo leaned closer.
"What did Vincent do to her?"
His father struggled to speak.
"Used her... against me."
The words came slowly, painfully.
Giovanni explained that Isabella had been raised away from the Moretti estate after her mother died. When she returned as an adult, she discovered that Vincent was stealing money from the family and manipulating its criminal operations.
She threatened to expose him.
Vincent retaliated by making her disappear.
Giovanni had spent years trying to find her.
Three days before his stroke, he received evidence that she was alive.
He planned to meet her.
He never made it.
Lorenzo's jaw tightened.
"Was the stroke part of the plan?"
Giovanni nodded.
Then he looked at his son with an expression Lorenzo had never seen before.
Not fear.
Shame.
"Your mother... knew."
Lorenzo's breath caught.
"Mother knew about Isabella?"
Giovanni nodded again.
"She tried... to help."
The old man's eyes filled with tears.
"Vincent killed her."
Lorenzo stood motionless.
Everything he had believed about his family had been built on lies.
His uncle had murdered his mother, destroyed his father, and manipulated him into taking control of an organization that might have been compromised from the beginning.
And now Isabella was somewhere in the world, carrying a secret that could destroy them all.
Nora listened from the doorway.
She had come to check on Giovanni after the doctor cleared her to walk short distances.
She hadn't intended to overhear anything.
But when Lorenzo turned toward her, she saw a grief in his face that made her stop.
"My father has another daughter," he said.
Nora nodded slowly.
"Then she's family."
Lorenzo looked at her.
"You don't understand what that means in my world."
"Maybe not."
She placed a hand over her belly.
"But I know what it means to grow up believing nobody is coming to save you."
Her voice softened.
"If she's alive, you should find her."
Lorenzo studied her for a long moment.
"Why do you care?"
"Because your father cared. And because nobody deserves to disappear just because someone powerful wants them gone."
He had no answer.
Later that evening, Marcus found a recent bank transaction linked to Isabella's old identity.
The payment had been made from a small town outside Boston.
A surveillance team was dispatched immediately.
Before midnight, they located a woman matching the photograph.
She lived above a closed flower shop, used a different surname, and rarely left her apartment.
When the agents approached, she didn't run.
She looked at their identification, then asked one question.
"Is Giovanni still alive?"
They told her yes.
She closed her eyes.
"Then I'm too late."
One of the agents asked what she meant.
Isabella opened her eyes again.
"Vincent isn't the one who ordered the stroke."
May you like
She looked directly into the camera attached to the agent's jacket.
"Your father knows who did."
