Chapter 10 - The Man Behind the Name

Nora was sitting beside Giovanni when Lorenzo entered the room.

She looked up immediately.

"What's happened?"

He held up the photograph.

"Did you find anything hidden in my father's blanket?"

Nora frowned.

"No. Why?"

"Someone believes you did."

She looked toward the heated blanket folded across Giovanni's knees.

Then she remembered something.

"The night I bought it, I noticed the old blanket had a tear along the seam. I thought someone might have hidden a sharp object inside it, so I checked before throwing it away."

Lorenzo moved closer.

"What did you find?"

"A key."

She opened the small drawer beside the bed and removed a brass key wrapped in a piece of cloth.

"I kept it because I thought it might belong to one of the old cabinets."

Lorenzo stared at it.

The key bore the initials G.M.

Giovanni's eyes widened.

He reached toward it with trembling fingers.

"Vault," he whispered.

Lorenzo looked at his father.

"What vault?"

Giovanni swallowed.

"Below... chapel."

The estate's private chapel had been sealed for years after a fire damaged its lower level.

Lorenzo had assumed the basement was unsafe.

Now he ordered Marcus to accompany him.

Nora insisted on coming, but Lorenzo refused.

"You need to rest."

"And your father needs someone who knows how to care for him."

He looked at Giovanni.

The old man was watching Nora with unmistakable trust.

Lorenzo exhaled.

"Fine. But you stay beside Marcus."

They crossed the estate through a narrow passage and entered the chapel.

Behind a damaged stone altar, they discovered a concealed door.

The brass key fit.

Beyond it lay a small underground vault containing ledgers, old photographs, sealed envelopes, and a recording device.

Lorenzo opened the first ledger.

The pages documented payments made over fifteen years to politicians, police officials, shell companies, and individuals whose names were connected to the Moretti family's most violent disputes.

Some entries were signed by Vincent.

Others bore Michael Rourke's initials.

And several were authorized by a name Lorenzo had never seen before.

Elias Moretti.

He stared at the page.

His father had never mentioned an Elias.

Marcus checked the remaining documents.

"Boss, look at this."

He held up a birth certificate.

Elias Moretti had been born thirty years before Giovanni.

He was listed as Giovanni's older brother.

But according to the family history, Giovanni had been an only child.

The document was dated decades earlier and carried the signature of a physician who had died long ago.

Lorenzo felt the floor shift beneath him.

The vault contained another recording.

He pressed play.

A man's voice filled the chamber.

"Giovanni, if you are hearing this, then Vincent has failed."

The voice sounded remarkably like Giovanni's.

But it was deeper, colder, and older.

"I warned you what would happen when you chose the boy over the family. You gave Lorenzo everything. You gave him the name, the organization, the loyalty of our men."

A pause.

"Now he will learn what you refused to understand. Blood is not a bond. It is a debt."

The recording ended.

Nora stood motionless.

"Who was that?"

Lorenzo looked at the birth certificate.

"Elias Moretti."

Marcus checked the date on the recording.

It had been created six months before Giovanni's stroke.

They returned to Giovanni's room just before sunset.

The old man looked exhausted, but when Lorenzo showed him the birth certificate, he began to cry.

"Brother," he whispered.

"He's alive?"

Giovanni closed his eyes.

A slow nod.

Lorenzo sat beside him.

"Why did you tell everyone he was dead?"

Giovanni's voice trembled.

"Father... chose me."

He explained in broken sentences that Elias had been the firstborn son and the original heir to the Moretti organization. But Elias had become increasingly violent, treating the family's power as permission to destroy anyone who challenged him.

Their father had stripped him of his inheritance.

Giovanni had taken control.

Elias disappeared.

Years later, Giovanni learned that his brother had survived and begun building a separate criminal network.

Vincent had become Elias's inside man.

The stroke had been the first step in a plan to reclaim the organization.

"Where is he now?" Lorenzo asked.

Giovanni shook his head.

"Close."

Those were the last words he managed before exhaustion forced him to rest.

Three weeks later, the blizzard had passed.

Nora's pregnancy had stabilized, and Lorenzo arranged for her to live in a quiet guesthouse on the estate grounds with a dedicated nurse and complete freedom to leave whenever she wished.

He did not ask her to stay.

He offered her a choice.

She chose to remain until Lily was born.

Their relationship changed slowly. Lorenzo stopped treating protection as an order and began asking what Nora wanted. He learned to sit beside her without filling every silence. He accompanied her to medical appointments and listened when she spoke about the future she wanted for her daughter.

Giovanni continued rehabilitation.

His speech returned in short, difficult phrases, and the first complete sentence he spoke to Nora was a request.

"Let me hold Lily when she comes."

Nora smiled through her tears.

"Of course."

Lorenzo began dismantling the network Vincent had built inside the organization. Michael agreed to testify about the financial conspiracy, while Mrs. Gable's cooperation helped investigators locate her missing son.

But Vincent remained at large.

And Elias Moretti had vanished again.

On a quiet spring morning, Nora gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

Lorenzo stood outside the delivery room, pale with fear, until a nurse emerged and told him both mother and daughter were safe.

When he entered, Nora was holding Lily against her chest.

Lorenzo approached carefully.

"She's beautiful."

Nora smiled.

"Would you like to hold her?"

He hesitated before taking the baby into his arms.

Lily opened her eyes.

For a moment, the ruthless head of the Moretti organization looked completely lost.

Then the baby wrapped her tiny fingers around his thumb.

Lorenzo bowed his head.

"I promise I'll do better than the men who came before me."

Nora watched him, knowing that a promise was only the beginning.

Across the room, Giovanni sat in his wheelchair beside the window, sunlight falling across his silver hair.

For the first time in five years, he looked peaceful.

Then a guard knocked on the door.

"Mr. Moretti, there's a package downstairs."

Lorenzo handed Lily back to Nora and followed him.

The package contained no return address.

Inside was a small silver pocket watch, a photograph of Giovanni and Elias as young men, and a handwritten note.

YOU HAVE THE WRONG BROTHER.

Beneath the message was a second photograph.

It showed Lorenzo as a newborn, held in the arms of a woman who was not Maria Moretti.

On the back, someone had written a date and a name.

ELENA VALE — THE WOMAN WHO GAVE YOU LIFE.

Lorenzo stared at the photograph.

His mother had raised him.

His father had loved him.

But if the note was genuine, then the foundation of his identity had been built on a secret nobody had dared reveal.

He returned to Giovanni's room.

The old man was awake.

Lorenzo held up the photograph.

"Father. Who is Elena Vale?"

Giovanni's expression changed.

His hand began to tremble.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he looked toward Nora and the sleeping baby in her arms.

"Don't... trust..."

His voice broke.

Lorenzo leaned closer.

"Don't trust whom?"

Giovanni's eyes filled with terror.

"The woman... who brought you home."

Before Lorenzo could ask another question, the lights flickered.

A distant alarm sounded from the front gate.

Marcus rushed into the room, his face white.

"Boss, someone has breached the perimeter."

"Who?"

Marcus looked at the photograph in Lorenzo's hand.

Then he spoke the words that ended the peace they had barely begun to build.

"Your mother is here."

Outside, a black car stopped beneath the estate's stone archway.

A woman stepped out.

May you like

She looked directly toward the window where Lorenzo stood.

And she smiled.
