Chapter 9 - The Last Lie Before the Truth

"Emily Carter is responsible for Antonio Romano's death."

Victoria Sterling stood before a television camera in the lobby of a Manhattan hotel.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were red.

She wore a modest black dress, a deliberate contrast to the designer gowns that had once filled society magazines.

For weeks, she had avoided reporters.

Now she had called them herself.

"Antonio was a vulnerable elderly man," she continued. "And I believe he was manipulated by a woman who wanted access to his fortune."

A reporter raised her hand.

"Ms. Sterling, are you accusing Emily Carter of murder?"

Victoria paused.

"I'm saying the authorities should investigate every possibility."

Another reporter spoke.

"Are you aware that investigators are examining financial transfers connected to your investment company?"

Victoria's expression tightened.

"I have done nothing wrong."

"Did you have an affair with Adrian Romano while engaged to Dominic?"

"That is a private matter."

"Did you offer money to Emily Carter's former boyfriend in exchange for damaging statements?"

Victoria froze.

The reporter repeated the question.

"Ms. Sterling?"

Victoria stepped away from the microphones.

"My attorney will address these allegations."

She hurried toward the elevator.

But the damage had already been done.

Her accusations against Emily were spreading across social media.

And somewhere outside Albany, a pregnant young woman was watching her name become a headline.

Emily sat on Margaret's couch, staring at the television.

The news anchor repeated Victoria's allegations.

A photograph of Emily appeared beside a picture of Antonio.

The caption identified her as the housekeeper who had received a substantial benefit through the late businessman's estate.

Margaret turned off the television.

"Don't watch that."

Emily remained motionless.

"People are going to believe her."

"Some people believe anything they hear."

"Mom, she's saying I killed him."

Margaret sat beside her.

"You saved his life when nobody else would help him."

"But he's dead."

"Because he was an elderly man with serious medical problems. His doctors know what happened."

Emily wiped her eyes.

"I keep thinking that if I'd found him sooner—"

"Stop."

Margaret took her daughter's hands.

"You gave Antonio something he hadn't had in a long time."

"What?"

"Someone who treated him like a person."

Emily began crying.

Her mother held her carefully.

Outside, a car pulled into the driveway.

Dominic arrived carrying a folder.

Emily stood immediately.

"Did you see?"

"Yes."

"She's blaming me."

"I know."

"Can she do that?"

"She can make allegations. But allegations aren't proof."

Dominic placed the folder on the table.

"Dr. Mercer has provided a statement to investigators."

Emily stared at him.

"What did he say?"

"He admitted that he altered Antonio's medical records and followed improper medication instructions under pressure from Victoria and Adrian."

Margaret covered her mouth.

Dominic continued.

"He also says Victoria asked him to prepare a false report suggesting you interfered with Antonio's medication."

Emily sank into a chair.

"Why?"

"Because she needed someone else to blame."

"Will they arrest her?"

"That's for the authorities to decide. The evidence has been submitted."

Emily looked up.

"Then why is she still on television?"

"Because she's trying to influence public opinion before the investigation reaches its conclusion."

Margaret shook her head.

"That woman has no shame."

Dominic looked at Emily.

"Isabella is preparing a legal response. We have medical records, witnesses, and evidence that you called emergency services."

Emily took a trembling breath.

"I don't want revenge."

"I know."

"I just want Grace to be safe."

Dominic sat beside her.

"Then that's what we'll focus on."

The next morning, federal investigators executed search warrants at several Sterling-connected offices.

Financial records were seized.

Electronic devices were collected.

Employees were interviewed.

Charles Sterling's attorneys issued a statement denying wrongdoing.

Adrian's lawyers announced that their client was cooperating.

Victoria's attorney declined comment.

The investigation was far from complete, but the financial evidence was becoming difficult to explain.

One transaction attracted particular attention.

A payment of $750,000 had moved from a Sterling-controlled account to a consulting firm associated with Dr. Mercer.

The transfer occurred shortly before Antonio's medical care became more restrictive.

Another payment went to a company connected to Marco Bellini.

Marco had already acknowledged receiving money in exchange for unauthorized access, though he denied knowing about the full medical scheme.

His cooperation helped investigators reconstruct the sequence of events.

Victoria and Adrian had wanted Antonio legally declared incompetent.

They needed his authority transferred.

They needed Dominic distracted by allegations of financial misconduct.

And they needed enough control over the company to complete the disputed asset transfers.

Antonio's death would have strengthened their position by triggering an insurance claim and complicating his ability to challenge the documents.

But Emily had intervened.

She had called emergency services.

She had helped restore Antonio's access to independent physicians.

And she had unintentionally exposed a conspiracy that had been developing for years.

Three days later, Isabella called Dominic.

"Victoria's attorney wants to discuss a settlement."

Dominic stood in his office.

"Of what?"

"She's willing to retract the allegations against Emily if you agree not to pursue certain civil claims."

Dominic laughed without humor.

"She's bargaining with a lie."

"That's my assessment."

"What does Emily think?"

"I haven't spoken to her yet."

"Then we ask her."

That evening, Dominic explained the proposal.

Emily listened quietly.

When he finished, she shook her head.

"No."

Dominic looked at her.

"You're sure?"

"She threatened my mother. She tried to ruin my reputation. She accused me of killing a man I cared about."

Emily placed a hand over her stomach.

"If I agree to silence everything, what's stopping her from doing this to someone else?"

Dominic nodded.

"We'll proceed through the courts."

Emily looked at him.

"Not because I want to destroy her."

"I understand."

"Because she needs to be accountable."

Meanwhile, Victoria was sitting across from Charles Sterling in a conference room at his attorney's office.

Their relationship had deteriorated into accusations and suspicion.

Charles looked exhausted.

"You should never have gone on television."

Victoria crossed her arms.

"You told me to protect the family."

"I told you to stop talking."

"You were happy to use me when I was engaged to Dominic."

Charles said nothing.

"You wanted me to marry him. You wanted access to his company. You wanted revenge for something that happened before I was born."

"Your mother and I lost everything because of Antonio."

Victoria stared at him.

"Did you?"

Charles frowned.

"What?"

"Did Antonio steal from you? Or did you steal from him?"

Charles's face hardened.

"Be careful."

Victoria leaned forward.

"I've seen the records."

"You don't understand those transactions."

"I understand enough."

Charles stood.

"Everything I did was for this family."

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"That's what you always say."

He moved toward the door.

Then Victoria spoke again.

"Did you know they were going to kill Antonio?"

Charles stopped.

For several seconds, he didn't turn around.

"I knew Adrian was desperate."

"That's not an answer."

Charles finally faced her.

"Antonio was supposed to be declared incompetent. Nothing more."

Victoria stared at him.

"You knew his care was being manipulated."

"I knew Mercer was handling the medical side."

"And you did nothing?"

Charles looked away.

Victoria felt sick.

She had spent her life believing her father was a victim.

Now she saw a man who had built his identity around resentment and taught his daughter to confuse cruelty with strength.

For the first time, she understood how much of her life had been shaped by someone else's revenge.

But understanding did not erase what she had done.

A week later, Victoria appeared in court for an initial hearing concerning financial charges.

The proceedings were public.

Reporters gathered outside.

She wore a plain navy suit.

Her attorney argued that she had been manipulated by Adrian and Charles.

Prosecutors presented evidence suggesting she had knowingly approved suspicious transactions and participated in efforts to conceal them.

The court imposed conditions while the case proceeded.

Victoria left through a side entrance.

No limousine waited.

No photographer asked about her dress.

No society friend came to comfort her.

Her phone contained dozens of unanswered messages to people who no longer wanted to know her.

She stood beneath the gray Manhattan sky and finally cried.

Not because she had lost Dominic.

Not because Adrian had betrayed her.

But because the life she had built around wealth and status was collapsing, and she could no longer pretend she was innocent.

At the lakeside house, Emily was preparing Grace's nursery.

The room was small but warm.

Cream-colored curtains hung beside a window overlooking the water.

A white crib stood against the wall.

Margaret had knitted a pink blanket.

Dominic had assembled the rocking chair himself, though it had taken him three hours and several embarrassing phone calls.

Emily stood in the doorway, smiling.

"You know, you could have paid someone to do that."

Dominic examined the chair.

"I considered it."

"Why didn't you?"

"Because I wanted to build something for her with my own hands."

Emily walked toward him.

He placed a hand gently against her stomach.

Grace kicked.

Dominic laughed in surprise.

"Was that her?"

Emily nodded.

"She recognizes your voice."

He looked at her.

"Do you really think so?"

"Maybe. Or maybe she's complaining about the furniture."

He smiled.

Then his expression grew serious.

"Emily, I need to tell you something."

She waited.

"My lawyers have finished reviewing my involvement in the old businesses."

"And?"

"I'm going to cooperate fully with the investigations. I may face consequences for things I allowed to happen."

Emily studied him.

"Are you afraid?"

"Yes."

It was the first time he had admitted fear so openly.

She took his hand.

"Then do what's right anyway."

Dominic nodded.

"I intend to."

He reached into his pocket.

Emily's breath caught.

But he didn't remove a ring.

Instead, he produced a small silver key.

"What's that?"

"The key to a house."

She frowned.

"What house?"

"A place with no guards at the gates. No locked wings. No family portraits reminding everyone who owns the walls."

Emily stared at him.

"Dominic..."

"I found it near your mother's rehabilitation center. It has a garden and enough room for Grace."

"Are you giving me a house?"

"No."

He smiled gently.

"I'm asking whether you'd like to build a life there with me, once we've had time to decide what that means for all of us."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"You don't have to buy me anything."

"I know."

"Then why?"

"Because for the first time in my life, I want a home more than an empire."

Emily stepped into his arms.

He held her carefully.

For a moment, the world outside seemed quiet.

Then Emily suddenly stiffened.

Dominic pulled back.

"What is it?"

She looked down.

A small puddle had formed at her feet.

Her eyes widened.

"Dominic."

He froze.

"What?"

"I think my water just broke."

He stared at her.

Then at the floor.

Then back at her.

"Now?"

Emily almost laughed.

"No, next Tuesday."

Dominic grabbed his phone.

Within minutes, they were on their way to the hospital.

Grace Carter had decided she was ready to meet the world.

May you like

And nothing about her arrival would go according to plan.
