Chapter 7 - The Wedding That Became a Public Execution

"That unborn child is not getting a single dollar of Romano money!"
Victoria Sterling's scream echoed through Adrian's penthouse overlooking Central Park.
She threw a copy of Antonio's estate documents onto the marble floor.
Adrian stood by the window, holding a glass of bourbon.
"Lower your voice."
"Don't tell me to lower my voice! We spent eighteen months arranging everything, and now a pregnant servant is inheriting part of the family empire?"
"She isn't inheriting the empire."
"Then explain this!"
Adrian picked up the document.
Antonio's revised trust had been executed after his hospitalization, following an independent capacity evaluation and with legal witnesses present.
The amendment directed a portion of Antonio's personally owned, legitimate investments into a protected educational and support trust for Emily's daughter, Grace Carter.
The remainder of Antonio's personal estate was distributed through longstanding family and charitable provisions.
Crucially, Antonio's trust also held a controlling voting interest in a major Romano Holdings subsidiary.
Its independent trustees had authority to review any disputed transfers before recognizing a new controlling shareholder.
That meant Adrian's boardroom victory was not secure.
Victoria paced the room.
"Can we challenge it?"
"We can try."
"Then do it."
Adrian stared at the papers.
"The doctors documented his capacity. His attorney recorded the signing. The witnesses were independent."
Victoria slammed her palm against the counter.
"That maid manipulated him."
"Prove it."
"I don't need to prove it. I need the public to believe it."
Adrian turned.
"What are you planning?"
Victoria smiled.
"Something spectacular."
Three days later, invitations appeared across New York society.
Victoria Sterling and Adrian Romano announced their engagement.
The wedding would take place at the Sterling family's private estate in Greenwich.
The guest list included business executives, influential attorneys, wealthy investors, and prominent social figures.
The ceremony was scheduled for the following Saturday.
To outsiders, the announcement looked scandalous but glamorous.
Dominic's former fiancée was marrying his cousin only weeks after their separation.
To Dominic, it was confirmation of a betrayal he had already documented.
Emily learned about the wedding while eating breakfast at Margaret's rehabilitation facility.
Her mother lowered the newspaper.
"Well, those two certainly don't believe in wasting time."
Emily almost laughed.
"Mom."
"What? I'm old, not blind."
Margaret folded the newspaper.
"How are you feeling?"
"Tired. Grace keeps kicking."
"Good. She takes after you."
Emily smiled.
Then her mother reached across the table.
"Sweetheart, there's something I need to say."
"What?"
"Don't confuse gratitude with love."
Emily looked down.
Margaret continued.
"Dominic has helped us. He cared for you when you were frightened. That matters. But he's lived a dangerous life."
"I know."
"And you have a daughter to think about."
Emily placed a hand over her stomach.
"That's all I think about."
Margaret studied her.
"Are you falling in love with him?"
Emily didn't answer.
Her silence was enough.
At Romano Holdings, Isabella and a team of forensic accountants were reconstructing the disputed transfers.
They had uncovered a crucial detail.
Adrian had used temporary control of the company to approve an agreement transferring valuable port leases to a Sterling-connected investment group.
The purchase price was far below independent market valuations.
More importantly, the agreement contained a clause granting Adrian a substantial personal payment if the transaction closed.
"He's selling assets to companies he secretly controls," Isabella explained.
Dominic studied the documents.
"Can we stop it?"
"We're seeking an emergency injunction. The independent trustees are also challenging his authority."
"How long?"
"The court has scheduled a hearing. Until then, we need to preserve the records."
Dominic looked at a photograph of his father on the desk.
"Antonio spent years trying to make this company legitimate."
"Then help finish what he started."
Dominic turned.
Isabella met his eyes.
"You cannot repair the Romano name while keeping one foot in the criminal world."
He said nothing.
She continued.
"If you want the court to believe you're serious about reform, you need to disclose the illegal activities you know about and accept the consequences."
Dominic stared at her.
For the first time, he understood that reclaiming his father's empire might require surrendering the kind of power he had spent his life protecting.
On Saturday evening, the Sterling estate glittered beneath hundreds of lights.
White roses lined the entrance.
A string quartet played beside a marble fountain.
Inside the grand ballroom, guests admired elaborate floral arrangements and champagne towers.
Victoria stood before a mirror wearing a custom-made wedding gown.
Her father, Charles Sterling, entered.
"Beautiful," he said.
Victoria smiled.
"Everything is finally happening."
Charles adjusted his cufflinks.
"Remember what I told you when you were a little girl?"
"Never let a Romano take what's ours."
He kissed her forehead.
"Tonight, we finish what I started."
Victoria looked at her reflection.
For the first time in weeks, she felt victorious.
At 7:45 p.m., Dominic arrived.
He wasn't invited.
He wore a simple black suit and carried no visible security entourage.
Isabella walked beside him.
Several guests turned.
Whispers spread through the ballroom.
Adrian approached immediately.
"You have no right to be here."
Dominic looked at him.
"I'm not here for the wedding."
"Then leave."
"I'm here because the independent trustees asked me to attend a meeting with several directors present tonight."
Adrian's expression changed.
"What meeting?"
Isabella produced a legal notice.
"A preservation notice and an emergency court order preventing disposal of specified corporate records. The relevant parties have been served."
Adrian stared at the document.
Victoria approached in her wedding dress.
"Dominic?"
He turned.
She smiled for the watching guests.
"This is inappropriate."
"Then perhaps you should ask your fiancé why he arranged business transactions that benefited companies he secretly owns."
Her smile disappeared.
"You're making accusations at my wedding?"
"Yes," Isabella replied. "And we have supporting records."
Charles Sterling stepped forward.
"This is harassment."
Isabella looked at him.
"Mr. Sterling, you may wish to contact your attorney."
The confrontation moved into a private reception room.
Several independent board members, legal representatives, and a court-authorized records custodian were present.
Victoria insisted that the wedding guests remain unaware of the dispute.
But the argument became loud enough for people outside to hear.
Adrian slammed his hand on the table.
"Those transfers were authorized!"
"By forged approvals," Isabella replied.
"Prove it."
She opened her laptop.
A forensic specialist had identified discrepancies in the electronic authorization logs.
The relevant signatures originated from a device assigned to Adrian's office, not Dominic's.
Another document showed that Dr. Mercer had received substantial payments from a Sterling-linked company during the period when Antonio's care was being restricted.
Victoria's face grew pale.
"That doesn't prove I knew anything."
Isabella displayed records of transfers from the same company into Victoria's investment accounts.
"Then explain these payments."
Victoria stared at the screen.
Adrian stepped away from her.
"Victoria managed those accounts."
She turned sharply.
"What?"
"I wasn't involved in her personal investment decisions."
Her mouth fell open.
"You lying coward!"
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Be careful."
Victoria laughed bitterly.
"Oh, now you want me to be careful?"
She turned toward the board members.
"He's been stealing for years! He told me Dominic would take the blame!"
Adrian lunged toward her.
"Shut up!"
Dominic moved between them.
"Don't touch her."
Victoria stared at him.
For one desperate second, she seemed to believe he was protecting her out of lingering affection.
Then Dominic stepped away.
"Nobody else gets hurt because of this."
The ballroom doors opened.
Victoria emerged with tears streaming down her face.
Guests rose from their chairs.
Someone asked whether the ceremony was canceled.
Before she could answer, Charles Sterling approached.
"Victoria, come with me."
She pulled away.
"Did you know?"
Charles frowned.
"Know what?"
"That Adrian was planning to leave me with the liability?"
Charles looked toward the gathered guests.
"Lower your voice."
Victoria laughed.
"That's what everyone keeps telling me."
She turned toward the crowd.
"My fiancé has been lying to me!"
A stunned silence followed.
Adrian appeared behind her.
"Victoria, stop."
She pointed at him.
"He used me to move money through my company. He promised we'd own everything together!"
Adrian's face went white.
Several guests raised their phones.
Charles tried to intervene.
"Enough!"
But Victoria was no longer listening.
"You told me Dominic would be ruined. You told me Antonio would never recover enough to testify!"
The room went completely silent.
Dominic stood near the doorway.
He watched Victoria realize what she had just said.
Isabella quietly instructed her team to preserve the publicly recorded statements and identify witnesses.
A moment later, investigators who had been pursuing the financial case arrived with warrants for specific records and electronic devices.
They did not arrest everyone in the room.
But they secured evidence that Adrian and Charles had hoped would disappear.
Victoria's wedding had become a catastrophe.
And the guests who had arrived expecting champagne and celebration were now watching the collapse of one of New York's most carefully cultivated social alliances.
Later that night, Dominic returned to the lakeside house.
Emily was sitting near the fireplace.
"How was the wedding?" she asked.
He removed his coat.
"Short."
She smiled faintly.
"Did you get what you wanted?"
Dominic considered the question.
"I thought I wanted to see them humiliated."
"And?"
"I didn't feel better."
Emily studied him.
"Maybe because humiliation doesn't bring your father back."
He sat beside her.
"No."
She reached for his hand.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then Dominic looked at her.
"Emily, when this is over, I don't want to return to the man I was."
She squeezed his hand.
"Then don't."
He leaned closer.
She didn't pull away.
Their first kiss was gentle, hesitant, and interrupted by the sound of Emily's phone.
She glanced at the screen.
An unfamiliar number.
She answered.
"Hello?"
A man's voice spoke.
"Emily?"
Her entire body stiffened.
"Who is this?"
"It's Daniel."
She went pale.
Dominic noticed immediately.
"Daniel who?" he asked quietly.
Emily barely heard him.
Because the voice on the phone belonged to the man who had abandoned her when she became pregnant.
The father of her unborn daughter.
And he had returned with a demand.
May you like
"I know the Romanos are giving you money," Daniel said. "And I want my share."
